Need help with uniform identification

This photo, the size of a postage stamp, was found in my grandmother's locket, underneath a photo of my uncle. I estimate that the photo dates from 1895-1902. The identity of the soldier is unknown. My grandmother's family lived mostly in Durham in the north of England. She was found in the 1901 census in London but otherwise lived in Durham. In 1903 she married a Scot who was living in Durham. Any assistance in identifying the uniform of this soldier would be much appreciated.

Very difficult to make out the glengarry badge, but the collar badges look like they could be the Royal Scots Regiment and that would fit with the diced pattern on the glengarry. The date is around 1890-1905

I've attached an image of the collar badge (it's distorted so click on it to see it as it should be) but you'll have to use your web browser to find the Royal Scots Glengarry Badge

Thank you for your reply, Jeff. It is most helpful. It will be a good step in trying to identify the soldier.
