Seeking info on Helen Syers who married Vernon McManus about 1948, had sons Vernon (Bud) McManus and Ronald James McManus, divorced about 1951. Bud and Ronnie were raised in Steuben by my (and their) grandmother.

Steuben is in Schoolcraft County. You may want to post this message on that message board if you haven't.

Thanks. I am from Steuben originally and still live in Schoolcraft County.. I did manage to locate Aunt Helen Syers McManus, alive and well in Houstan Texas. Just wondered if other Syers might have additional info. Thank you for responding to my inquiry.

I remember Agnes McManus, who had a son named Tommy. Agnes was a cousin of Lucille "Slivers" Harris Carr, and used to come over and visit. Slivers was my neighbor.

There were lots of Syers in Van Meer, five miles north of Shingleton. Mille Syers Beauprey, Dorothy Syers Harris, Pete Syers, etc.

Agnes McManus is my mother, she lives in Marquette as does my brother, Tom. I live in Manistique during the summers but winter in Arizona.

I have met Donald McManus and have spoken to Helen Syers McManus in Texas but had my Christmas card to her returned this past winter.

TNeville, have you found out any more on Helen Syers and her ancestry? I have a couple of Syers lines that go up into Shingleton and Munising but would like very much to add to my Syers tree. If you can get back to a certain point/given name, I may be able to take you back to ca. 1800 with the Syers family. I'm 99% certain that all the Syers folk up there are descendents of my great great grandfather, David Alexander Syers, and his wife Laura Louisa Sacket.

You are correct, Helen Syers is a descendant of David Alexander Syers, through Clinton Syers. Interestingly, my father's younger brother, Vernon McManus, married Helen Syers while my mother's cousin, Rayburn Harris, married her sister, Dorothy Syers.

I live about 35 miles from Shingleton and Munising so am able to check records and cemeteries there.

I see on your tree that you have George Syers, father of David Alexander, dying in 1836....I found one census record in 1840 that lists a George Syers in Allegany Pennsylvania and wondered if it might be him....what is your source for his death? Just wondered. Theresa McManus Neville tneville3@aol.com

Theresa, thanks for the e-mail address. After this I'll contact you that way. Just checked my tree here on Ancestry and I don't show a death date for George. Haven't tried to search for anything new on him for awhile but if I recall correctly he last appears in the records as a patient in an asylum, having remarried after his divorce from Elizabeth Harned. (I believe his second wife's name was Charlotte?)

The 1840 Allegany Co. mention of George Syers is almost certainly the same one, IMHO.

Thanks for your quick response!

Jill
