Margaret Stroup

Looking for the parents of Margaret Stroup who married Jasper Eoff on July 25, 1870, in Jefferson Co., MO. They had two sons, Henry Martin born August 4, 1872, and William Jasper born June 11, 1876. She is supposed to have died when William Jasper was about 18 months old.

I cannot find John & Mary or Margaretta STROUP in the 1850 census anywhere in PA. Do you know where they were in the 1850 census? Are you certain Margaretta was born in Juniata Co., PA?

From John's obit: John b 1816, m Miss Mary Albright when he was 24 years old. After four years residence in Juniata county during which their daughter (listed as Margaret in John's obit) was born, they decided to cast their fortune in then what was call the far West.

oops, almost missed this: Margaret inter-married Samuel Neff and has children, unknown at this time. From Mary's will.

Margaretta was b: 18 Jun 1842, d: 1929.

Records show that she lived at Topeka, Kansas and was listed as Margaretta and Margaret Stroup in Mary's will in 1903 .

Hope this is a connection for you, I have most of the John Stroup family.

John & Mary (ALBRIGHT) STROUP

I'm afraid I don't have a John STROUP b. 1816, and I can't find him in the 1850 census. Nor did he show up as head-of-household in Juniata Co., PA, in the 1840 census, so, although he was married at age 24 (in 1840 or 1841), he must have been married after the 1840 census was enumerated.

Back then, most children lived with their parents until they married, so we would expect to find John's parents living in Juniata Co., PA, in the 1840 census. The only STROUP/STROUB/STRAUB couple living in Juniata Co. in 1840 that is old enough to be John's parents are Peter STROUB/STROUP (b. 1799) and his wife, Catherine (b. 1797/8).

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/PeterStroub-Catheri...

From Peter's will (1847), we know they had a son, John, but based on the numerical data, there is no child born before 1820 in their household in either the 1830 or 1840 census -- but then, the census is not entirely dependable. It seems a distinct possibility to me that your John might be the son of Peter & Catherine (__?__) STROUB/STROUP. If you could find your John living near any of Peter & Catherine's other children in later censuses, it would be strongly supportive that he is their sibling.

Children of Peter & Catherine were:

Samuel STROUP, b. 1820; m. Sarah __?__; 1850/60/70 census, Juniata Co., PA; 1880 Census, St. Joseph Co., IN

Nathan STROUP, b. 1821/2; m. Nancy __?__; 1850 census, Juniata Co., PA

Peter STROUP, b. 1825/6; m. Catherine __?__; 1850 Census, Juniata Co., PA

John STROUP, b. 18??

Daughters (b. 1820-40): Catherine, Susannah, Elizabeth, Mary Jane

Samuel obviously did not "go west," but Nathan or Peter (or any of the sisters) might have. You really need to find John & Mary in the 1850/60/70/80 and 1900 censuses and look for any other STRAUB/STROUB/STROUPs living nearby -- also, for any ALBRIGHTs, who may be easier to find because their name is less likely to be misspelled in the indices. Do you know the names of Mary (ALBRIGHT) STROUP's parents or siblings? Do you know where, even roughly, John & Mary were in any of the censuses?

I'm fairly new at all of this but maybe this is where my John B. Stroup fits in.

My John B. Stroup was born 2/5/1830 in Dimmesville Pa. He married Salome Schellenberger (1831 -1899) both burried in Elizabethville Pa. He was a doctor in Elizabethville Pa. (I have more information on his life if you are interested)

Children of Dr. John B.Stroup and Salome are

J. Calvin
Salome
Fannie
Mary Alice (1855-1940) and
Clemment Bryant Stroup (my line) 1864-1934.(druggist)

All are burried in Elizabethville Pa.
Do you think there is any connection between my John and the one you indicate as a child of Peter and Catherine ?

Thanks
Karen

Well, John is always a tough one because it must be THE most common German first name, and there were many STRAUB immigrants to PA, so you can never assume any STRAUB/STROUB/STROUP is related. I have a large STRAUB/etc. database:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/EveryNameIndex-Straub-J...

but I don't seem to have your John. Do you have his 1850 census record? That would be the first record I would seek out. I have what I think are all STRAUBs in the PA census on my web site:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/PA/PACensusStraub/1850.htm

but there is no John who is obviously yours. Can you spot him there? Depending on whether he married before or after the census, he should show up as a newlywed or as still living with his parents. The latter would be ideal because then you'd have his parents identified.

Hi. This is Catherine. My grandfather was John Lafeyette Stroub. He was born in Brooklyn in 1895. He died in May of 1970. I have no knowledge of any other family members besides my grandmother Anna (Ryan), and a brother Steve, and my first cousins . He made very little mention of family at all to my Father (Walter). I am checking out your site. I would appreciate anything you could tell me.

It is my policy at my web site not to reveal information about living people, which has meant that there is almost nothing on my web site regarding STRAUB/STROUB/etc., in the 1900s. Also, while I have some information about STRAUBs who came to NY in the 1700s and moved, in the 1700s, on to Pennsylvania, there is virtually nothing on NY STRAUBs at my web site. Most of the STRAUBs at my web site immigrated to Pennsylvania (in the 1700s) or Ohio (in the 1800s). Sorry.

I would recommend, for your first move, to get your grandparents' death certificates. These should give you not only the dates and places where they were born and died, but should also give you the names and birthplaces of their parents.

Always work from the known to the unknow, backwards and step by step.

Good hunting.

P.S. STROUB is often a phonetic misspelling of STRAUB, so look for that surname, too.
