Silva and Martins

Danielle  (View posts) Posted: 12 Jul 1999 4:01PM GMT
I'm researching my family line which goes through Cova Rodela and Santa Barbara on the island of Brava. One line is SILVA. Ramos (my great-grandfather), Manuel Domingos (my grandfather), Manuel's brothers (all but 2), his brother-in-law, and some other men died in 1943 in a shipwreck somewhere off the coast of Bermuda. The ship's name was Mathilde.
The other line is MARTINS. My grandmother Fortunata was born in Cape Verde and married Manuel D. da Silva. Her mother Aurora TORRES was born in Portugal. I don't know where her father Fortunato MARTINS is from.
If you have any info. on anything mentioned above, please email me. I'd be willing to share what I have.

Nickname for Manuel was Abel. Nickname for Fortunata was Natinha. Ramos wife name was Dominga or Domingas (maiden name unknown). Manuel also had a daughter Maria (last name unknown) by someone else before he married Natinha (her name is unknown as well).

Re: Manuel D Da Silva - do you by chance have the date of birth for this Manuel you are referring to. Or any other information. My grandfathers name too was Manuel "SILVA"
as I have heard. He had past away at a young age of thirty something. Please let me know. The Manuel in my family was previously living in the Fresno County area, then later in Santa Barbara.

I don't have a DOB, but I know Manuel died young (mid-to-late twenties or early thirties). I don't think my Manuel & yours are the same, but here's the info. I have on him .. :)

Manuel Domingos da Silva (nicknamed Abel)
died August 1943, somewhere near Bermuda (shipwreck off coast of Bermuda); the ship was called the Mathilde or Matilda

Hi, by happenstance, I am Caron's sister. All the Martins family from the cape verdean islands spring from he island of Fogo, with neighbors Brava. Brava is THE SMALLEST island, but because of it proximity to Fogo, many people in Fogo are related to families in Brava. My grandfather was Alvaro Augusto Martins, born in January of 1898 Sao Felipe Fogo, and his mother was Mary Martins. He was a twin, his twin brother was Frank Martins, and he had a sister who died in the New Bedford area in 1978. My grandfather Alvaro died in 1960 and I believe he was 62 years of age. His widow Lavonne Way Gregory died in 1995. My father Richard and his sister Shirley Martins Compton are the surving siblings out of 5 children. please contact me if you have questions I am planning a trip to Cape Verde this year wth the intent of adopting a child and I will research my fathers roots.

Sincerely
Michelle Denise Martins de Ruano-Serret

Correction: my Grandfather Alvaro Augusto Martins was NOT born in Sao Felipe, he was born in Mosteiros, the northwest side of cape verde on the short side of the volcano. It is a Port town and sids on the edge of the sea.

I have a copy of the naturalization papers of Manuel Silveira born on March 16, 1873 from Fayal. He arrived at New Bedford Mass on the 15th of July 1890. He was a fisherman. His witnesses were Leopold J. Vierra residing on Perkins Street and Joaquim J Silveira (I believe this is my Ggrandfather who also was a fisherman but I know he was from Pico) residing on Sadler Street in GLoucester Mass. Manuel might be my ggrandfathers brother not sure. The papers were signed on Oct 20, 1903. Hope this helps some people.

I'm just going over old posts I've made and replies that were given and realized that when I'd replied to your reply I'd forgotten to add that my grandfather Manuel D. Da Silva (aka Abel) never lived in the U.S. He lived on CVI and perhaps mainland Portugal. Again, he died (along with most of his brothers, his father, and many other men from the island of Brava, CVI), at a young age (late twenties/early thirties) in a shipwreck in 1943, reportedly somewhere off the coast of Bermuda. The ship Mathilde or Matilda was part of the Cape Verde packet trade. He was survived by his wife, his children, his mother Dominga (or Domingas), his brother Frank, and his sister Jovena (aka Tia). Unfortunately, he never lived in the California area.
