Sarah May
Thompson, age 93, of
Kinsman,
Ohio, died Friday, September 14, 2007 at Northside Medical Center in Youngstown,
Ohio.
She was born Feb. 10, 1914, in
Kinsman,
Ohio, a twin daughter of Norman and Bertha (
Westlake)
Thompson.
A resident of
Park Vista Retirement Community in Youngstown for the past nine years, Sarah was a lifelong resident of
Kinsman. She graduated from
Kinsman High School in June of 1932; and in Sarah's elementary years her travel to school was in the Kid
Van, a wagon pulled by horses. In 1935 she graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. and Master's Degree.
Sarah began teaching in
Kinsman grades 4 and 5 as an art teacher from 1935 to 1940. She then was hired into the Warren City
Schools teaching social studies, physical education, and art at
McKinley and
Secrest Schools. She also was art supervisor and principal with 18 years total in administration. Sarah received one of the top awards given by the Freedoms Foundation.
Sarah was a lifelong member of the
Kinsman Presbyterian Church, where she served as
Elder and Treasurer. She was a member of the Women's Association and wrote the church's 150 year history in 1981.
Sarah served on the
Kinsman Public Library Board from 1971 to 1993; was given the Community
Leader of
America award in 1969; was honorary mayor of Warren in 1973; and was named Woman of the Year in 1974. She also was in Who's Who in the United States. Sarah wrote many articles for the
Kinsman Journal, the Warren Tribune, the Youngstown Vindicator, and the
Kinsman Area
News. She was instrumental in getting several road, school, and police levies passed; and in getting toll free service in
Kinsman from Warren.
Sarah had been active in the American Association of University Women,
Alpha Omega
Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Mary
Chesney chapter of the National Society of the D.A.R., the
Ohio State Officers Club, NSDAR,
Kinsman Ideal Literary Club, the Warren Elementary Principals Association,
Ohio and
Trumbull County Retired Teachers Associations, Warren
Civic Music Association, and the board of trustees of the Children's Rehabilitation Center.
Sarah is preceded in death by her parents; and twin brother,
Emery Norman
Thompson.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at the
Kinsman Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church St., Kinsman, with Rev. Larry
Myers officiating. Burial will follow in
Kinsman Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, P.O. Box 304,
