My GGF and his brother were sharpshooters in I Company of the 6th TX Cav Regt. For the Corinth Campaign they were attached to Col Stirman's Bn AR. Does any one have any info on their deployment at Corinth, Hatchie Bridge and their effectiveness. My GGf was captured at Hatchie Bridge with a broken arm. Later paroled and returned to the 6th TX.

Col. Stirman wrote some brief memoirs/letters home, which were published. I don't know how to get a copy.

Try the internet and bring up University of Arkansas Special Collections under The Rebecca Stirman Papers. Quite a few Erasmus Stirman letters are located there. Col. Ras Stirman left Fayetteville Ar in 1879 and moved to Denver, Colorado where he lived until his death in Jan 1914. He is buried as a CSA Veteran in Denver's famous Farimount Cemetary. Thanks! I am Ras Stirman's great grandson, and I am interested in following up with you regarding information on the battle at Corinth. I have been working with the Washington County Historical Society in Fayetteville AK for a couple of years with regard to Ras, and our quest these days is to find his military photo. The family has other photos, copies of which we've donated to the WCHS, but soemhow we cannot locate his photo in uniform. Corinth is a lead I haven't investigated much until now, and I would appreciate any information or leads you could offer. do you have a photo of your GGF at the time. If there are others in that photo, (i.e., not a portrait,) perhaps one is Ras.

William, My GGF and GGU were privates in Company K, 6th TX Cav and were attached to Ras Stirman's Regiment for Corenth. As I try to discover these two family members, I have had a cource in history. Petter Cozzen's book, The Darkest Days of the War, is quite good on Phifer's Brigade. Other discussions on how the SS regiment was designed to be employed, on the Arkansas board plus this book give an interesting picture of battle on the 2nd day of Corinth and Hatchie Bridge. I believe that Ras Stirmans regiment was in the middle of both of those battles and commended itself quite well. If two yankee divisions had not arrived at the time they did, elelments of the brigade may well have over run Rosecarns headquarters. At Hatchie Bridge Ras covered the withdrawel from the east sid of the river after they recrossed. I will have to backtrack, but I seem to remeber seeing a picture online on one of the boards that showed the battle structures. Will try to locate it.

Are the published versions in both script and print? I obtained the 1862 summer & winter letters from the University of Arkansas for copy cost and signing a reproduction agreement.
Have you read the Darkest Days of the War, by Peter Cozzins? It had some of the movements of Phifer's Brigade and showed the Sharpshooters on the left like a line Infantry Regiment. After all the training, it was a wast to not use them as skirmishers. Have you read all the info on this board concerning sharpshooters, Stirman and Bridges who brought a lt Bn of SS from the 6th & 9th TX Cavs? Very interesting! A litttle more on the Texas board. I have a little as I am researching two brothers in Company I, 6th TX who were in Company I of Spirman's Regiment.

I pulled out the book In fine Spirits. Ras and his men were in the battle to try to recapture Corinth. Ras lost 50% of his men.
Ras's men were able to breach the earthworks and advance
toward the town center but had to withdrawal because Gen Lowell failed to make his effort. ( Page 52) Ras wrote 3 letters
about the Corinth campaign.

Thanks, I have only read one. Now I need to see the book. I cam imagine the Sharpshooters in the middle, even more than written. By exploiting the seam that occurred in front of the regiment they must have allowed both the Alabama reserve and parts of the two adjacent regiments to go toward Roasecarn's Headquarters. Had they over ran that, maybe nither the arrival of the two Union Divisions nor the needed reinforcement of the incursion would have mattered. Maybe we would not have the mess we have today. Again, I appreciate the info.

I wish I had a picture of My Great Grand Father or his brother. My older brother is sitting on our Family photo that were recovered after our mother died in 2000. I have a picture of his wife in about 1906 with her new husband, but that does not help. I am trying to get all I can on the 6th TX Cav Rgt to establish a web page depository. maybe I will find something. There must be some pictures out there. I will also look for a picture of LTC Bridges, in my efforts in Dallas County data for Company I, where many of it's men were mustered. Maybe Ras can be found there. My relatives were Robert Author Nolan (1841,TN-aft 1903,FL) and James Tyre Nolan (1842,TN-1906,GA), both privates.
