One John Poindexter of Christian Co., Ky. owned more than 50 slaves in 1860. I believe he moved from Virginia to Ky. between 1830 and 1840. I am doing some research for a local African-American family by the name of Poindexter and feel sure that there is a connection to this John. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Phillip R. Brown, Madisonville, Ky

A John Poindexter in MO is also shown in the slave census as owning a sizable # of slaves. I am also interested in whether he and Judith Poindexter listed in MO are the same as the Patrick County, VA John and Juditth Poindexters.
Any thoughts?

Thank you so much for this information. So many Johns--I was unsure "who we are." Is this part of your family also?
My g-g-grandmother Judith Poindexter Mills died in 1868 and was the mother of 3 children: James Leftwich Mills (my g-grandfather), Frank Mills, and Sarah (nickname Sally) Mills.
I am truly grateful to you.
