WM. R. CANTER

William Robert Canter was born in Middlebrook, Mo., on May 16, 1875, and died at his home in Knob Lick, Sunday, April 7, 1957, aged 81 years 10 months 21 days.

He was married on September 9, 1906, to Elizabeth Barnes, and they were the parents of seven children, two sons, Herschel and Lester, having preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife and five children: Opal (Mrs. Monroe Kinney) and Robert Lee Canter of Knob Lick; Vernon Canter of St. Louis; George Willis Canter of Illinois; and Barbara Ellen (Mrs. William Eaton) of Galveston, Texas. Twenty-five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Andrew Canter of Ironton Route and Edward Canter of Bonne Terre, and two sisters, Mrs. Melvina Durich of Ste. Genevieve and Mrs. Mary Ruse of Fredericktown, also mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Knob Lick, and burial was in the Knob Lick Cemetery. Cozean Service

My name is Mike Canter and I have been searching the Canter History for three years now and it's still frustrating as ever.

I was attacted to your post at ancestry.com for several reasons.

My Grandpa Canter's name was Lester(1897)...I saw a Lester in your post.

My daddy's name was William Robert Canter (1918)...ditto.

I have been trying to connect (sometimes forcibly)...my Canter family to the Maryland/Virginia Canters and have a pretty good case for that.

However, I just have a feeling that somethings don't make sense. Here they are.

Around the time of my grampa Canter's birth (1897)...there was living in Columbus, Ohio a Francis M. Canter who according to census was born in Missouri. Also living there was a Ruth Canter whose name has come up in memories of my Uncles...but they don't know how or what.

My grampa has been known to say that he was born on High St. in Columbus, Ohio...but he never lived there as far as anyone can remember ! He also has said that his daddy's name was Francis Marion Canter.

I have always been told that his parents were Frank Canter and Annie Hinzey...Frank born in Ohio and Annie in Kentucky.

Now...see my dilemna ??

Grampa's middle name was Sidney and he married Letha Perdue in 1914 in Cabin Creek, W.Va. He and his brother Francis Oat were living with Frank and Annie in 1900...but by 1910 Frank and Annie were seperated and the two boys were seperated and lived with other families...I found Francis Oat with a family in Ohio....but never found where Lester was sent.

In later years my last Uncle says that Frank would visit and had a Ruth with him whom they thought may have been their grandma.

I'm hoping that you may have some old records of this Francis M and maybe connect some ghosts for me.
