How do you find out why a Norwegian immigrant went to a certain location in the USA?

My great-grandmother, Dagny Valeur, arrived at Ellis Island on 3 Sep 1912 aboard the Oscar II (from Christiania, Norway) at age 16. Her destination is written as "Friends Mr. & Mrs. Wm. H. Liebrich (or Liebrick) / 4952 Warnock Street, Philadelphia, PA." (4952 Warnock Street is a row-home.)

Is there any way to tell why she would be going to the Liebrich's home? Or how she connected with them before leaving Norway? I assume she would be a servant for them, but I would like to know what she was doing at 4952 Warnock Street and how they were her friends.

She would not be on a US Census with the Liebrich's because she arrived after 1910 and was married before 1920.

I have attached a .jpg of Dagny's manifest list; she is line #22.

Any little bit of help would be much appreciated. I know this is somewhat long and confusing.

Takk.

WHY is always a difficult question to ever answer.

Look up the Liebrich (or Liebrick) family in the 1910 and/or 1920 census -- perhaps they were also from her home country.

Dagny Marie (born 7 Jan 1896) was leaving on or about 23 Aug 1912 from Oslo/Kristiania?

If yes, she lists her reason as "b. fortj." -- better life and/or fortune.

Yes, that is the correct Dagny Marie Valeur. The Digital Archives have her immigration date as August, not September. I have searched for William Liebrich, but there are several. I found one whose wife's name was Dagny, and she was Norwegian, though I never found them on Warnock Street.

I know "why" is extremely difficult to answer.

Thank you, though. (I knew you'd be one of the people to respond to my question!!)

The Digitalarkivet date is for when the ship was to LEAVE Norway - not the scheduled date of arrival in another port. Therefore that is the emigration date - the immigration date is the arrival.

Okay. What is the Eksp.dato (Exp. Date), which is 22 Aug 1912, the day before departure?

William Henry Liebrich was born:12 Mar 1875 in Philadelphia, PA, USA. He married Dagny Wiel Frolich in 1904. She was born in Norway. Her parents were: Mother - Dagny Wiel, and Father - Fredrik Frolich. Ancestry.com has a passport application -1921. For Wlliam H Liebrich and his wife Dagny and daughter: Frances Ruth Liebrich (born: 12 Apr 1905, Philadelphia, PA, USA) to visit relatives and friends in Norway...Hope this is helpful. I have been researching this family.

Going back to the 2010 question the question was WHY Dagny went to a certain location. Perhaps the family she went to live with was family or friends of family. It is very hard to say why they went to a specific location. Most had family or friends in the location they went to. Which of this family, John, are you researching and what do you already know about them? This was posted on the Østfold board is your family from there, Liebrich does not sound like a Norwegian name nor does Frolich, can you elaborate a bit more on them

No, not in this database -- not any connection to marriage. Notice the number of unmarried persons there who also have a date listed for "Eksp. dato" That is either the contract date or the date they appeared to give their names to the police creating the record of their emigration intention.

Thank you for all of the replies since I first asked my question. I didn't think "eskp. dato" had anything to do with marriage because I know my great-grandmother did not get married until she was living in New Jersey, USA.
