I am very interested in the name SPAINHOUR from Stokes Co., NC. I would like to know if the names SPOONHOUR and SPOONHOW were changed to SPAINHOUR. There are 3 families onthe 1800 census with the names SPOONHOUR AND SPOONHOW. However, on the 1810 census the names appear as SPAINHOUR. I am looking for Elijah SPOON. According to his Civil War records he was born in Stokes Co., NC. After he migrated to TN he may have changed his name to SPOON (especially if this was the orginial way the name was spelled.) He was born in 1822 or 1823. On the 1830 censes there were 5 households of SPAINHOUR that he could have been apart of: Jacob, Jacob Sr., John, Joseph, and Soloman. All of these households have a male child between the ages of 5 - 10. I am looking for the names of the children in these households. Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me with any responses.
Thanks,
Kathy Dexter

Thanks. Is there a way to search the records of the Moravians? Are there any web sites that list who and what these people were? I really appreciate all the help that you have given on this name. I know that Elijah SPOON did not just appear so I will keep looking until I find out who he was and where he came from.

The SPAINHOUR family came to North Carolina from Muttenz, Switzerland, via Pennsylvania. Spelling varies widely in the early records - Spoenhauer, Spanhauer, Spoonhower and many others. There are many descendants still in Stokes and Forsyth Counties. I think however that the SPOON family is different. The Records of the Moravians in North Carolina mentions an Adam SPOON b. 1736 who lived near Hope NC. I suspect that he is the Adam SPOON listed in Surry County in the 1790 census.

I believe that Elvira HELSABECK is the daughter of Joseph H. HELSABECK (1795-1869) and Susannah SPAINHOUR (1796-1870). She is buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist, Tobaccoville (Forsyth Co.) NC.

Susannah HELSABECK Doub's dates are 29 Jul 1788 - 12 Sep 1865, and she is buried at Doub's Chapel Methodist, old cemetery. She was the daughter of Jacob HELSABECK (1762-1848) and Eva Maria FISCUS (1762-1853), who are also the parents of Joseph HELSABECK, Elvira's father. The dates you list (1796-1859) are those of Susannah REYNOLDS Doub, wife of Jacob Doub's brother Joseph Doub, and buried in the same cemetery. This is confirmed by Susannah REYNOLDS Doub's obituary in the _People's Press_ in 1859, naming her as the wife of Joseph Doub, and by the presence of Susannah HELSABECK Doub in the 1850 and 1860 Forsyth county census records, living with her son Daniel Doub.

The Doub family materials that I have consistently give Susannah Helsabeck's husband as Jacob rather than Philip Jacob. Do you have a baptismal record or other evidence that his name was in fact Philip Jacob?

My great great great grandfather was Jonathan Spainhour. His name was changed to Jonathan S. Howard, for an unknown reason. He married Sarah Savage June 15, 1825, in Stokes, NC. If you can provide any information, please e-mail me at kpetrey30@hotmail.com

Hello,
I am interested in any information you may have on a Sarah/Sally Savage that was married in Stokes Co., NC on 15 JUN 1825 to Jonathan S. Howard. They later moved to Grainger Co., Tn and then on to Knox Co., Ky.
I have also seen information that Jonathan S. Howard was married first to a Katy Boose in Stokes Co., NC on 15 APR 1818. Since seeing that information I have found that Katy Boose is also listed in some archives as being married to a Jonathan Spainhower/Spainhour on that date. My question is could this Jonathan have changed his name? It isn't too much of a jump from Jonathan Spainhower to Jonathan S. Howard. Any information on a Savage marrying a Spainhower could, of course help me get to the bottom of this mystery! I am descended from Jonathan S. Howard and the trail has gone cold there in Stokes Co! Any help would sure be appreciated!
Suzanne

The 1818 marriage is definitely between Jonathan SPAINHOUR and Katy BOOSE. Jonathan was son of Johann Jacob SPAINHOUR (1750-1822) and Anna Catharina VOLCK.

Descendants of this couple who stayed in NC kept the spelling SPAINHOUR, although occasionally creative variants appear in census and other records. However, we already know that some families who left NC adopted the name SPAINHOWARD, and I can see how somebody might have found this too much to write and shortened it to Jonathan Spain Howard, then Jonathan S. Howard.

In other words, I think you're on the right track.

There's lots more information on the SPAINHOUR family at
