Can anyone tell me where I can obtain information on slave plantations and their owners for the Grimes County Texas area. I am trying to find out what plantation my gggrandfatherr lived on. His name was David White and I believe he was born in Houston, TX about 1844. The information regarding his place of birth came from the death certificate of one of his sons. David appeared on the 1870 Census in Grimes County, Navasota township.

Ms. Jackson,

Were you able to follow-up on info re this subject. My grand-mother was born on the Walker (Tom Walker) plantation...
I remember my mother saying that it was located in Navasota, Grimes County, TX. The family subsequently migrated to Kansas in 1897...The last names were Geary,
Brown, Richards and Richardsons...

Thank you so much for this information. So far I have been unable to find out anything. My relatives who lived in Navesoto Grimes County TX were WHITE, POWELL AND FOSTER. Most of the White's moved to Lott Falls County TX and the Powell's after leaving Lott TX moved to Okmulgee, OK. Do you know if there were any record that were kept of the Walker Plantation?

My Mom was always adament about "Tom Walker" the ole "slavemaster". Apparently she had heard the story from my GM and others who migrated to Kansas in the mid 1890's. She was also adament about "Navasota, Grimes County, Tx. i have pic's of my GM her sisters and other members of the family sitting on the front porch of a shack. Don't know exactly where but believed to be on the Walker planation. Family names were White, Richards, Richardsons, Walker.

Don't know of any records. I just finished part of the Grimes County 1860 census records. There are numerous Whites, Walkers, Richards, and Richardson's. I believe the info is there...

This may require a road trip to Texas...

I don't know where slave plantation records or kept, if they are, but you might check deed and court records, etc at the courthouse or on microfilm. Sometimes slaves are mentioned in those records.

Tom Walker is mentioned on the 1860 slave census for Grimes County, Unfortunately the slave census does not give the names of the slaves:

23. Walker, Thomas 1 27 F B
24. Walker, Thomas 1 26 M M
25. Walker, Thomas 1 24 M B
26. Walker, Thomas 1 24 F B
27. Walker, Thomas 1 20 M B
28. Walker, Thomas 1 10 F B
29. Walker, Thomas 1 9 M B
30. Walker, Thomas 1 5 M B
31. Walker, Thomas 1 1 F B
32. Walker, Thomas 1 1 M B
You can find this on the Grimes County TXGenWeb site in the census section. We also have the 1860 and 1870 census online if you want to look at that.
