Allen - Crenshaw

I am still looking for information on my father's side. I have found info that my g-g-g-g grandfather was Elisha Johnson Allen, lived in Warren County, died and is buried there somewhere. His son was Joseph and married into the Crenshaw family. He married Ann Crenshaw. His brother George Smith Allen married Ann sister. Any information would be helpful.

It appears that you need info on the Allens and Crenshaws who lived in the Barnett area of Warren County, Ga.

My g grandmother, Rebecca Ann Allen, was the daughter of Geo Smith Allen and Mary Crenshaw. All three are buried in the Barnett Methodist Church Cemetery. Rebecca had a dau who married John Henry Crenshaw and a son who married Mary A. Allen.

Reply if you are still in need of information.

Yes, I could use some more information. Do you know what George Smith Allen's father or mother was? Some say it was Elisha Johnson Allen, but I can't find anything to verify it. Also, absolutely no idea of the mother's name. I guess that George married Mary Crenshaw and Joseph (on my side) married Ann Crenshaw. In some census records there was an indication that their father was from Virginia, but again, I cannot verify that. Also, how did they get to Virginia or whereever as it must have been mid 1700's or so when they were born. Joseph was born in 1793 and is buried in Florida. Anything else would be helpful. Thanks.

BENJAMIN CRENSHAW was born 1760 in VA, and died 1850 in Warren Co GA. He married MARY "POLLIE" HIGHT 14 Aug 1797 in Warren Co GA, daughter of HOWELL HIGHT and JOHANNA JOHNSON. She was born 1783 in VA, and died 1865 in Warren Co GA. She is the "Mrs. Crenshaw" in the 1860 Census of Warren County.

Children of BENJAMIN CRENSHAW and MARY HIGHT are:
i. DELILAH CRENSHAW, b. 1798 - 1804; d. Bef. 1825. Married 04 Feb 1817 in Warren Co GA Willis Beckwith (Beckworth) born 1782; died after 1850. (My Line)
ii. ANN CRENSHAW, m. JOSEPH ALLEN, 1822, Warren Co GA.
iii. ELIZABETH CRENSHAW, b. 1803; m. WARREN GREEN BAKER, 1824, Warren Co GA.
iv. MARY CRENSHAW, m. ELISHA ALLEN, 1837, Warren Co GA.
v. BENJAMIN CRENSHAW, m. SARAH DARDEN, 1830, Taliaferro Co GA.
vi. HENRY CRENSHAW.
vii. JOSEPH CRENSHAW, b. 1822; m. ELIZABETH (UNKNOWN).

Do I have something wrong in the preceding family group? Or are the Ann and Mary Crenshaw’s who married Allen’s (and that you refer to) part of the next generation?

Little bits and pieces is all I can give. You can come up with the same assumptions that I have.
Warren County Minutes of Ordinary 1858-1859 page 152. Elisha Allen, Jr. age 19 choses George L. Allen as his guardian.
Warren County Guardian Bond 1856-1890 page53 dated 6June1859 shows where George L. Allen posts a bond for Allen, Elisha Jr., orphan of Allen, Elisha, Sr.
Warren County Wills 1852-1897 page160-161 Allen, Elisha, Jr. made 21May1862, probated 6Mar1865 grandfathers; Crenshaw, Benjamin (deceased); cousins, Allen, George S.; Allen, Benjamin, Allen, James Thomas; sons of Allen, John: Executor; Allen George S. Sr.

Elisha Allen is listed as private, CSA in the Augusta Daily Chronicle March 9, 1862 attached to the Warren Infantry, Company B., 48th Georgia Regiment, Wright's Brigade. I have seen no report of him having been killed during the war.

George S. Allen was a Justice of the Peace during 1862.

Benjamin Crenshaw had a grand-daughter, Rebecca Ann Allen, who married James Lynn (my g-gfather). She was born 28NOV1841. Her parents were George Smith Allen (28DEC1799-23JUNE1883) and Mary Crenshaw Allen (13DEC1806-27JUNE1869). The cemetary marker for George Allen may have an error. It notes his birth date as 28DEC1806 but another marker at the grave denotes 1799.

James Lynn and Rebecca Allen had several children, including Leila/Lila/Lela/Lula (b:20June1865)who married John Henry Crenshaw on 20DEC1884.

Most of what you have seems correct. The only question I have is regarding Mary Crenshaw. I found some indication that she married George Smith Allen, Joseph's brother. I am not sure where the Elisha you have married to her would have come from. Joseph and Ann have an Elisha born in 1824, my gg grandfather, who married Sarah Langston who gave birth to my grandfather, Henry Allen. Do you find a marriage record for Mary and ELisha? I have looked at many trees that show Joseph married to Mary, but I found a record for Joseph and Ann being married in 1822. There is lots of Crenshaw information out there. My problem is with Joseph's parents. I think that Elisha Johnson Allen may be his father, but no indication who his mother was? Let me know if I have something you need.

Above from the warren County Marriage Records

George Smith Allen, b 12/28/1799 married Mary Ann Crenshaw on 9OCT1823.

My notes do not indicate where I found this record, but if you need me to dig it up, I'll try to find it.

Mary Crenshaw drew support in 1861 from warren County, possibly for husband's CSA service. Unknown certainty. Courthouse records spell her name CHRINSHAW.

Mary Crenshaw received ownership of some land from GS Allen in 1872. Adjoining landowners were Benj. Baker and William R. Allen. Also received ownership of a different tract from Geo Allen in 1872 with adjoining owner James Lynn.

Obviously, there are many different Crenshaw's and Allen's with the same first name.

Look for additional records for James, Elizabeth and Mary Langston as well as Rachel, Francis T. and Sarah Allen in the Sweetwater Baptist Church archives. They were all members somewhere between 1823 and 1850. The church is located in McDuffie County (Columbia County at that time)and may have additional records. Church #706 595 2832.

The Elisha Allen you spoke of is my great, great grandfather. I am looking for my great, great, great, great grandfather whom I think is listed on the statue in front of the court house, Elisha Allen (probably Elisha Johnson Allen). This Elisha served in the revolutionary war apparently and is buried somewhere in Warren Co. Is there any way to find out where. I cannot find very many cemetery transcriptions online. I have the name of a DAR member who is suppose to have information on each person listed, but have been unable to make contact. Any help is appreciated. I will be making a quick trip there the end of this month and would like to visit the cemetery if I knew which one. Thanks.
