James Barden was my maternal great-grandfather. Thought to have been born/christened in Rye, Sussex, UK (19th Century). He was married to my maternal great-grandmother Sarah Roberts(b.1834-d.1918).
Any info on James most welcome
Thankyou

He was a God Father to one of his brother's children,in 1884.
The child was Teresa BARDEN her parents were FRANK BARDEN and MARY E. McCLOUD.
God Parents: James BARDEN and MARGARET McClould.
Other possible brothers are: Joseph,George,John and maybe a sister Mary.

Could this be your James BARDEN, do you know if he was ever in NJ ?

Sincerly,

Hi Diane
Whilst it's tempting to think that your James could also be the same as mine I think that it is unlikely.
As far as I know my James was born in Rye, Sussex, UK. However he Sarah Roberts, his wife did have at least 2 sons Frank Ivor at least 1 daughter Elizabeth Ann Barden my maternal grandmother.
I've made a note of your info for reference.
Thanks
Eric R. Archer

Well I doubt it could be the same James.
My Barden's were Irish(I think). And to date, I've not found any Barden's with a wife
Sarah.
and I've seen alot, so much I've taken to photo coping any Barden record I come across.
Silly me !!!
Pretty much any family name I have on record I make copies of the record, Never know if I can piece this jig saw puzzle together.
Someday...
well good luck and I'll keep you in mind should I find a James with wife Sarah.
thanks for the reply.
God Bless.
Diane

My Barden line (great-grandmother Sarah Ann "Annie" Barden was b. Burwash, Sussex ca 1866) originates as far back as I can find in East Sussex - parishes Burwash, Heathfield, Mountfield, Battle, and the like. My first known Barden was probably born mid-1700's and lived at Burwash. He was a Thomas Barden, I have a copy of his will, which names his sister Elizabeth Waterhouse, a late son (Thomas), Thomas' Jrs.' wife (Sarah, probably Fuller), and the surviving grandchildren. I have done some research down from this family. Diana, Canada.

Diana my BARDEN came from RYE in Sussex. His first name was JAMES. He married my G-Grandmother SARAH ROBERTS (1834 - 1918).
I'm sorry I've no marriage date. All I know is that SARAH was Welsh from GLAMORGAN.
Hope this is of some interest

Hi Eric - nice to hear from you. I don't have anything in my files about your James but I imagine there is a connection with him and the rest of the Bardens around that area of East Sussex. Mine were concentrated around Heathfield, Burwash, Battle, Mountfield.
The earliest one I have found is a Thomas b. before 1727. He died in Burwash before March 1808 when his will was probated. He did not have any surviving children, but left everything to his grandchildren, the children of his son Thomas (married Sarah Fuller).
He also mentioned a brother John of Mountfield and a sister Elizabeth Waterhouse, married to William Waterhouse. I believe by the time he died, the only survivor was his brother in law and one grand daughter had predeceased him. I have not done a lot of work on his descendants yet, but do have a lot on my direct line - they were very prolific!

Dear Diana
I have now found more definitive evidence for the existence of James.
From the 1881 British Census ( LDS Church )James was born in PEASMARSH, Sussex not RYE as I said before.
He was described as a LOCO FIREMAN, was 26 at the time of the census ( Therefore born Abt. 1855 ) was living at 5, Upper James Street, St. Woollos, Monmouthshire.
His wife SARAH BARDEN ( née ROBERTS ) was 25 born at Radyr, Glamorgan, South Wales.
At the time of the census their daughter ELIZABETH ANN BARDEN, born in PENTYRCH, GLAMORGAN, South Wales. She was my maternal grandmother was onl 3 at the time of the 1881 census. Her actual birthdate was 10th May, 1877.
I hope this information helps to clarify JAMES BARDEN's Sussex ancestry.
Sincerely
Eric R. Archer
