Hi,I am trying to find a marriage for Sarah Faulkner, b;24 Aug 1885 Preebleton,Canterbury.Parents Henry and Mary nee Hammond.Sarah was the youngest of 5 children.The family lived in Hawera,where Henry died 1916,Mary died 1935.I believe Sarah was in the area at the time of her mothers death.Sarah was my G/Aunt.Tried BDM,but with no married name is hard to identify

Have you looked for the deaths of the parents, to see what they can tell you?

Try PapersPast (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/) for newspaper notices.

Or Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) for probates, which may name names. You won't be able to see the contents of the file(s) online, but once you've found them there you'll be able to visit the office where they're being held and view them for free. Or ask a friend to visit if you can't get there - ask here if you need help, and someone may be able to do that for you. Or pay Archives to photocopy it and send it to you for a fee.

Then again, take another look at BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/). There are only two Sarah FAULKNERs listed in the marriage indexes there, one in 1899 (when she would have been only 13 or 14 years old, which is unlikely).

That leaves Edith Sarah FAULKNER who married Leslie William RUDDLE in 1920 (registration 1920/10431). Don't be put off by your Sarah not having the first name of Edith - it might have been changed after her birth was registered. See what you can find online (eg PapersPast, online family trees) before spending any money.

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...)

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/), click on the link "Family History Records" down the left-hand side, then click on the link "Request death, marriage, civil union, and name change certificates". Scroll down the page to "Post your application form..." and click on the link "Request for a Certificate (BDM 93 D, M, C, or N". Now you're at http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Birth... where you can choose the appropriate form, download it, print it, fill it in and send it off with your payment.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

The only records I could find on a Sarah FAULKNER in Taranaki is below:
Maybe this school was a Girls boarding school ? Maybe John is Henry's
Brother who was the Guardian at the time Sarah was enrolled?
The only other Sarah FAULKNER I could find was in the Wairarapa
area.

You mentioned Sarah was born in 1885, This would mean Sarah should
have shown in the 1905 NZ Electoral Roll, as she would hae been 20 yrs
old. As there was no Sarah Faulkners in NZ in 1905 you could also
assume she married between the age of 16-20 (1900-1905).

I don't know if this would help or if it is merely a red herring - A Sarah Faulkner's birth is registered in 1885 as a child of Mary and Henry Faulkner but there is also a Sarah Faulkner who died aged 1 day in 1885 - could this be your Sarah? Do you know if she survived to adulthood?

Hi to Wendy,Jo and Jenny,I am so impressed with your efforts on my behalf.I will try to respond in this one message.I am still not sure I have the right lady.To Wendy thank you so much.I do have her parents death certs.I also knew about the two marriages you mentioned,but on further investigation I sort of put them aside.
To Jenny,Thank you again.The Sarah you mentioned in 1885 could possibly be her,which means there is another daughter that I did not know about,as she was at her mothers bedside when she died 1935.
To Jo,Thank you for these records as I do have some of them,apart from the School records.
You have opened up some more queries that I will have to try and solve.But thats the nature of the beast is it not.
