I`m researching the Zaborski name. My greatgrandfather is Stephen Zaborski born in Horodyszcze, Galicia in 1887. He married Martha Kohut. His fathers name is Theodore who married Marie Chepil. I do not know if Stephen or Theodore had any brothers.

I am looking for a gggrandfather - Mike Zaborski. His daughter Emily Zaborski was born in Poland on Sept. 15, 1863. She married a Michael Jacobsen (son) and it might have been that the Jacobson name was americanized. Any help? Thanks

I too am looking for this name as part of my
grandmother's family (Zabori-Zaborszky-
Munkacsi-Chovan). Here's what I found
looking in Google:

Last Name: Zaborski
Polish: habitational name for someone from any of the various places in Poland called Zaborze, named with za ‘beyond’ + bór ‘forest’

Hope that might help.

Although the Polish connection is a possibility, I think with the "szky" spelling it is more likely to refer to Zabor in old Turoc megye, now Zaborie SK, SE of Martin. I have seen that name while researching in that area, and there is a Daniel Zaborszky who immigrated from Zabor in 1913.

Fred, I am not as certain about the queries for Zaborski, since they seem to have a definite connection with Galicia/Poland. However, your family is almost certainly the Zaborszky family that originated in Turocz megye. It is an old noble family that dates back to the 1200s. Chovan is an alias for this family. If you would like more information, email me directly.
