I too have just started a family tree. My great grandmother's name was LuLu Markham,
From what I can get from my mother, is that it was not always Markham but they came by this new name because
the old family name was Indian and when you said it it sounded like Markham. The Markham family I speak of
is buried in Centrellia Illinois, close to Sandovile.
Can you help me?

I am very interested in any information you might have on any Markham's in the Centralia, Il. area. My maiden name was Markham and my family came from that area. My ggrandfather was Bird Markham/Marcum and at present, I am looking for any information I can find on him. My grandparents were John Henry and Edith Miller Due Markham. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,
All I know for sure is that my great-grandmother's name was LuLu Markham.
She had two children named Johnny and Nora Brown(my grandmother). Johnny Brown died in a boating accident on Carlyle (sp) Lake in the 1960's. Pretty much all of my grandmothers relatives are buried in a cemetary not too far from Centrilla but I do not recall the name.
A fond story of grandmother's was that her mother had to change the last name because it sounded too Indian. LuLu was almost 100% Cherokee Indian.

I hopw this helps,
Melinda :) :)

Jazz,
I know that she passed away in the 1950's but I'm not sure if it was St. Louis or Illnois.
At the time of her passing she was taking care of my mother and another grandchild.
Lulu's daughter, Nora, had a husband who owned a bar in Centralla/Sandoval called Smitties or Smitty's
that was a popular nick name for him.
That's all I have now.
Hope to hear from you soon:)

Melinda, don't you have email? It is hard to communicate on this board. Anyway....my Lulu Markham was born dec. 1880 in IL probably Nashville. Her father was Lewis Markham Jr. Was Markham your ggrandmother's maiden name? When she had to change her last name was it her maiden or married name that she changed? Do you have proof your Lulu was Cherokee? I have run across Markhams in Arkansas/TN that are Native American. It would help you in your search if you could find the cemetary and check out the relatives. Jazz

Bird Marcum

jazz  (View posts) Posted: 22 Jun 2000 11:38AM GMT
There is a Bird Marcum listed in the Jefferson Co. IL 1880 census 50 years b. Va
Farmington, His children Marcus 18 IL;John 16 IL; James 15 IL; Joseph 13 IL. (another source says Mason Co. IL - but since a BIRD Markham is also found in Jefferson in 1860 I think that may be a typo but you might want to check both places.) 1860 Jefferson Co. IL census show Bird Marcum 40 TN wife Sarah J. 35 IL Kids: Mary E. 14, Martha A. 10, Sarah R. I William T. 5 Coleman B 3. Coleman later shows up in Nashville. Also another Marcum near by...William 40 TN Wife Nancy 35 kids: James 15 Il Willima 13 IL; Sarah 8 IL, Orlenia F. 3 IL and Elizabeth 3/12months IL. Probably Bird's brother.

I saw that there is a lady that has indian heritage in the Markham ancestry. I too have and
do not know anything more than I was told about 2 1/2 years ago. My ancestor was " American
Ann Markham " , she was a Cherokee Indian woman that was supposed to have sewn on the American
Flag. I keep running into road block as my mother was adopted by her grandmother and I am under
the impression that my mothers biological mother was Patricia Grassley. Any help in my search
Would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
