Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
Looking for a connection to Emelia W. Palmer, a White woman, who was married to George D. Ford, a Black man. Both are my ggrandparents, and they both were born in 1858 probably in the Hudson area or the Stockbridge, MA area. I believe both are buried in/or around Hudson.

I found a few records of George and Wilhelmina:
1870 Claverack (Hollowville PO) - Wilhelmina PALMER domestic servant 13 in the household of Mary MILLER 61, Eva Elizabeth 36, Robt H 30, also Almira Smith 45 dom. servant, Andrew Kertz 30 farm lab., Maggie Ames 14; all born NY, white. 1860 Claverack (Churchtown PO) - Catherine J. PALMER 26 domestic, Robert 7, Charles 5 and Amelia W. 3 in the household of Richard BORTLE 49 farm labourer, Catherine 45, Frank 12, Andrew 6; all born NY, white. 1850 Livingston – Richard BORTLE 37 farmer, Hannah 35, Margarett 12, Frank 2, Catharine J. 17; all born NY, white.
1880 Claverack – George Ford 22 W servant/farm laborer, with 3 other servants B in household of William H. Philip 50 lawyer and large family. Note: This George may not be yours. This was a wealthy family that lived in the Talavera mansion, about which a book was written by Leila Philip, a descendant. 1870 Greenport – George Ford 9 B in household of Charles WHITFORD 30 B farm lab b. MA, Mary J, 32 B keeping house, also Charlotte E. Whitford 3 B, Jane Hogeboom 60 B. 1860 Stockbridge, Berkshire Co. - Mary Jane FORD 40 B b.NY, Peter 12 B b.NY, George 1 Mu b.MA in the household of Paul S. PALMER 63 farmer b.CT, Hannah 55 b.CT, William P. 15 b.MA, Mary Welch servant b. Ireland. 1850 Ghent – Benjamin Ford 49 B farmer, Mary J 27 B, Louisa 5 B, Peter E. 1 B. all b.NY
It's probable that Wilhelmina's mother was Catharine Jane Bortle, daughter of Richard Bortle & Catharine Silvernail, baptized 19 Feb 1834 at Christ Lutheran Church, Ghent. Descendants of Henrich Barthel, a 1710 Palatine German. She possibly married a son or relative of Paul Palmer of Stockbridge, had 3 children and then he died. More records are needed.

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
The parents of Amelia Wilhelmina Palmer are Thomas Palmer & Catherine J. Bortle, who married at Linlithgo Reformed Church in Livingston in 1852. In 1850 Thomas is living with his parents Thomas Palmer 63, born Ireland and Hannah 42 born NY in Livingston.
I don't have the Linlithgo marriage book (only an index), maybe someone else here can give the exact date and any notes. Also Thomas & Catherine should be in the 1855 Census at Claverack or Livingston, the only census they would be together before Thomas died (or disappeared!)

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
From the book "Marriage Record of Linlithgo Reformed Church, Livingston, New York" by Arthur C.M. Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, New York, 1970, page 27, No. 632 3.6.1852; Thos. A. Palmer, Livingston and Catharine J. Bortle, Livingston.
1855 NY State Census, taken 25 June 1855, at Livingston, Line 1, Dwelling 99, frame house valued at $25.00, family 110: Thomas A. Palmer, age 26, male, head, born Columbia Co., married, resident for 26 years, native voter. Catherine Jane Palmer, age 21, female, wife, born Columbia Co., married, resident 5 years. Richard F. Palmer, age 2, male, child, born Columbia Co., resident 2 years. Robert M. Palmer, age 1 male, child, born Columbia Co., resident 1 year.
Hope this helps, Susan M.

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
Thanks Susan. I knew you had that book :)
That seems to match the family in 1860 after Thomas died (apparently) and Catherine moved back to her parents, although the names of the boys are confused:
1860 Claverack: Bortle, Richard 49 farm labourer, Catharine 45, Frank 12, Andrew 6, Catharine J Palmer 26 domestic, Robert 7, Charles 5, Amelia W 3.

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
Hi Jim, In the l860 census at Taghkanic I found: Taken 15 August 1860 Thomas Palmer, age 73 Hannah Palmer, age 53 Thomas A. Palmer, age 32 Catherine J. Palmer, age 23 Margaret A. Palmer, age 21 Robert A. Palmer, age 27 Richard J. Palmer, age 7 The other census was taken on 23 August 1860 - seems Catherine J. and children moved. Possibly Thomas A. Palmer went into the service??
I haven't looked to see if he did join.

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
Susan, my Squire Brown and Lucretia Vreedenbergh baptised a child in that church in 1798. Could you please check for a marriage record?

Re: Emelia Wilhelmenia Palmer
OK, a Thomas Palmer, residence; Claverack enlisted in Hudson in the 167th Infantry, mustered in Sept. 22, 1862 for 3 years. He was white and married. Bounty paid by town: $100 and bounty paid by county $50.
