Seeking information on the Hillery's in Monongalia. Especially the family of William L Hillery whose son was Owen (married Mary Myers) whose daughter married Moses Lough and another son Samuel L. A daughter Mary Ellen who married a Waters. Their son married a Hawkins.

Another possible daughter Margaret (Marguerite?) who supposedly married a John Leezer (Liezer).

Supposedly William married a McDougal but all I can find is a Margaret Hillery who married a McDougal. Unsure if this Margaret is Williams daughter or sister? The dates don't match well as this Margaret was born in 1783 in Maryland and William supposedly born in Maryland in abt 1798.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi -
I just came across your message. I believe I may have some information on the Hillery family of Monongalia. William is my GGGG Grandfather, through his son, Owen. Owen's daughter Martha married Moses Lough.

The only marriage information I have on William is that he married Elizabeth Upton on 16 Apr 1818.

I show that Owen had a sister named Margaret, born abt 1823. I am not certain if she is his sister or if they are related i some other way. In any case, she live in his house according to the 1850 census.

I am happy to share any other information I have. Just ask!

Hi Steve! We contacted through ancestry.com about a year ago. You kindly sent me pictures and the Frank Wray McKee letter. William Hillery and Elizabeth Upton were my GGG grandparents through Samuel (Owens brother). You may wish to revisit my Hillary tree on ancestry, as I have been busy researching!! My ancestry ID is kdh81. I will send you an e-mail so you have mine again. I think I have found where Owen, his wife and William are buried. (Possibly their old homestead on Pone Run in Monongalia I found on a West Virginia land ownership map!) Frank McKee's letter said he had pictures of the grave markers? Would you have them too?

Thanks for getting back to me.

In the 1970's I was hiking in the woods in the high hills area of the Old Pink Mercer Farm Ifound some over turned and half buried tombstones of a Waters family. I straighten them up best I could and wiped them off. There is a housing developement near those woods last I was out that way so I don't know if the woods are even still there.

My ancestor, Elijah Waters (1801-1889) married as his third wife, Anna E. Hillery (b. 14 Sept 1823) and they had two sons, Wesley Clark Waters (1854-1908) and George Travers Waters (1858-1860). They lived in Grant District, Monongalia Co., WV. Is this any connection to your Hillery family?

Yes!!! Anne E Hillery was my 2nd great grandfathers' sister!!!! His name was Samuel L Hillery. I have Elijah and her two sons on my tree. Written family history suggests Wesley Clark married a Hawkins? Records only show he married Emma Barb.

I assume you are descended from Elijah's wife Mary Griffith? I have Griffiths throughout my maternal and paternal lines but am having difficulty connecting them!

Thank you for responding to my post!!

I only have Wesley Water marrying Emma Barb. Nothing on a Hawkins. Yes, my line is through Elijah Water's first marriage to Mary Griffith. Mary was a daughter of Jonathan Griffith and granddaughter of Levi Griffith. Levi lived in Wharton Twp., Fayette Co., PA.

I forgot to mention in my last posting that I too have Hillery ancestors living in Fayette Co., PA. I have an Osborne Hillery born in Maryland 1759 died in Springhill Twp., Fayette Co., PA in 1847. He was a son of William Hillery (1717-1789)of Frederick Co., MD and grandson of Thomas Hillery (1686-1728) of Prince Georges Co., MD. I have often suspected that some of the Hillerys in Monongalia Co., WV were connected to Osborne Hillery but never really did any research.

My research indicates they probably are, though difficult finding documentation that far back. On my tree the Osborn you mention I have as my 4th great uncle. His brother william was likely my 4th great grandfather and father of my 3rd great grandfather. The two Williams were first Hilleary's to relocate to Monongalia County. Both show up in the earlier census data from Monongalia around 1800.

So we are probably distant cousins!

I just took the new DNA test from Ancestry and they have linked me to verified 4th cousins! But none from my Hillery line. All from my mothers line. Her great grandparents came from French Canada, and Canada has great source material, better than the US that far back. (Though it is all in French, but my French in college is coming back to me!)
