Previously worked on geneology (before internet) and became frustrated. Descendent of Elias Hughes. Trying to find out the complete link. Jonathan was only son that stayed in Licking County. As my entire family back as far I know lived in Licking County, I would think he is one of the links. The courthouse burned in Licking County and never able to piece together the whole line. My grandfather David Hiram Hughes was born in Licking County in 1900. I believe his father was Hiram Hughes. He lived in Utica, OH. Does anyone have any information to help me out? Thanks, Jackie Hughes Thomas

I have also hit a brick wall in looking for the Elias Hughes in my tree. (Don't know where he is from.) I know he has a sister named Temperance. Last known was in Abingdon, (Washington), VA. around 1791. Any connection?

I know the Elias Hughes I am connected to ended up in Licking County. I have not read anywhere that he had a sister, only 2 brothers Thomas, and Jesse.

Where is Licking County? Please remember that not everyone on the net automatically knows what county and state you are referring to, especially our friends in other countries who are not familiar with American geography.

I'm not sure if our Thomas Hughes is related to your Elias, however, Thomas moved to Licking County, Ohio in 1806 with his father William. Thomas was born in Virginia in 1802 and his father William was born in Maryland.

Hi...I have been searching Cleveland-Stewart lines... those families originally came to Michigan from Ohio. Have found out that granddaughter of Elias Hughes (he married Jane Sleeth);;daughter was named Jane Hughes..she married Abram Hite...daughter Elizabeth Hite...she married John Stewartsonson, Francis Marion Stewartson...son, Marion Chester Stewart...who was my grandfather. Didn't know about Elias Hughes....big family secret? Do know that my grandfather, Marion Chester's, wife used to say that there was a curse on the family. No mention, ever, of Elias Hughes, the so-called great Indian fighter and hunter....sure was a different time back then. Any info on your end would be appreciated....most likely, we are distant cousins.

Hello...have read some of the McWhorter book...it is available on Ancestry.com web site. Attempted to print it...very difficult. Yes, it seems as if Elias and Jesse Hughes were famous (infamous) for their Indian fighting and hunting. Of course, times were different back then...alot of savagery on both sides (red/white). my branch of the family were totally unaware of the history. My maternal grandfather's paternal grandmother was named Elizabeth Hite...she was the daughter of Jane Hughes Hite, who was the daughter of Elias Hughes and Jane Sleeth Hughes. I don't know what that would make me....a great-great-great granddaughter? (Six degrees of separation.:) I don't know of the other book. Thanks for writing.

Jackie and any who may have interest in this thread:

Jackie, if you are still on the board, this information may help you get started in the correct direction on your Elias HUGHES.
Although I can not provide specific information on family siblings or lines, I can provide some background on Elias HUGHES.
Elias HUGHES came to Licking County, Ohio with his nephew, John Rafliff and their families. They came from the South Branch of the Potomac of Virginia in 1797. One of my CHANNELL ancestors, John CHANNELL, came with them, and these families were said to have been the first five families into present day Licking County. They spent that first winter of 1797-98 in what is now Marietta, Ohio.
Hughes, Ratliff and CHANNELL "settled" (they appeared to have been practicing tomahawk land acquisition) on land that was granted in 1797 to Col. Ebenezer Zane. Zane sold the land to his son-in-law, John McIntire in 1798. When McIntire arrived on his land in 1799, he found the HUGHES, et.al on his land, along with four other families.
I don't have specific information beyond this time frame for what became of HUGHES and Ratliff or their families, but I do know that CHANNELL, after presumably being "evicted" by McIntire, moved to what would become Madison Township in Licking County.
Hughes and CHANNELL were considered to be Indian fighters and outdoorsmen of great skill. Unfortunately, in today's modern politically correct world, HUGHES history has become tainted from his exploits.
I hope that this has been helpful. I would certainly be interested in any further information on what may have happened to Elias HUGHES and his family after 1799.

Kind Regards,
Micheal Mathews

Elias Hughes, son of Thomas Hughes, Sr; son of William Hughes; son of William Hughes; son of William Hughes, died in 1844 in Licking County, Ohio and is buried in the old Utica, Licking Co., Ohio Cemetery on the south side of Utica along Ohio Road 13. I have photos of his tombstone. Jane his wife is supposedly buried near Johnstown, Licking County, Ohio. Elias was my 1rst cousin, 6 generations removed. His history in Licking County is written up in the Licking County, Ohio History. Due to the hurricanes in Florida this las Summer all of my information is packed away and I don't have it available or I could give you more details on Elias. I do have some info on his lineage and ancestry on this computer, but nothing in detail. If you want to write me direct at actor@gbso.net I will try and help as much as I can, with what I have.
