Searching for my Helms family. They were residing in Ontario County New York by 1810. They lived in and around Seneca. At least half of this family migrated to Livingston and Gratiot county Michigan by the 1850's. Samuel H. Helms is a direct descendant of Peter Helm, a palitine immigrant who came to colonial New York in 1710. Would like to hear from anyone interested in this family. I answer all my mail and will exchange information with anyone interested.
Sincerely,
Dawn M. Winans Flint, Michigan

Got all excited when I saw your message board. I am look for WHO Bethecy Helm married. Her daughter married a Sylvester Inman in Cuyahoga, Ohio in 1828. I question was how they migrated from New York to Ohio. I have some information as to Samuel Helms father and grandfather. Let me know what you need, and I'll see if I can "dig" (ha ha) it up for you. If you have any information on my quary, PLEASE...This is the only missing link I am trying to solve now. Thanks. Hi! Meed more info. on my ancestor Daniel Helms, born c. 1788 in NY, married Martha Warner of CT (b. 1792-d. 21 May 1878) in about 1809 in Ontario, NY. They had 4 children, all born in Seneca, NY: Daniel (b.1810), Jehiel or Jahiel (b. Jan. 1812, d. Apr. 1902), Jerome Clinton, and Hiram. Son Daniel married Catherine Leddick (b.1814) in 1840, Seneca, Ontario County, NY. They had 4 children: Frank b. 1843 in NY, plus born in Michigan---James b. 1845, Daniel b.,1854, Nancy b. 1858. In May 1844 Jahiel Helms married Harriett McKnutt (b. 1821, Palmyra, NY) whose parents were William McKnutt/McNutt and Elizabeth McGinley. Seeking names of Jahiel and Harriett's children. Looking for links to Great grandfather, Civil War veteran (Michigan infantry), James Wesley Helms I, possibly born 08 Jan 1844, Groveland, Livingston county, NY, died and buried Vincennes, IN 25 Jan 1894.

I think this is Jehiel & Harriet with their children in these census:
1850 Genoa, Livingston, MI
Jehiel Helms 34 NY Harriet 28 NY Jas 6 NY Wm 4 NY Sarah 0 MI
1860 Hudson, Lenawee, MI
Jehiel Helms 44 NY Harriet 39 NY James 16 NY William 14 NY Sarah 10 MI Albert 8 MI George 5 MI Harriet 3 MI
1870 - but where is Jehiel ? Hudson, Lenawee, MI
Harriet "Hohner" 49 Harriet L 13 Sarah E 19 George A 15 Rosella 8 MI ELIZABETH MCNUTT 73 PA
note that James is not with the family. There is a James Helms age 25 b NY with wife Mary age 20 b England in 1870 Vincennes. Indiana Marriage Records show he married a Mary Hudson 01 Nov 1869 in Knox Co, IN.....this could be him. There is a later marriage record 09 Oct 1888 to Anna D Grote in Knox Co IN, his father Jehiel & mother Harriet "McKneitt". In 1900 Patoka, Gibson, IN there is an Anna D Helms b Oct 1854, widow, with children Robert M 9 & Ada M 6. In 1910 she is back in Vincennes age 55 with Robert 19 & Ada 16. So it would appear that the James living in Vincennes was indeed the son of Jehiel & died before 1900....????
1880 - Harriet says she is a widow - Hudson, MI
Harriet Helms 56 Oatus Lester 27 son-in-law b NY Harriet Lester 23 George Helms 24
1900 Hudson, MI
Peter Sones 57 Feb 1843 MI married 1875 Sarah 50 Feb 1850 MI Wilfred J 17 Jul 1882 MI HARRIET HELMS 77 mother-in-law Jul 1822 NY
The informant on Harriet's death certificate was Mrs. Peter Sones. Harriet b 01 Jul 1821 d 28 Mar 1908 in Hudson
Some food for thought - if Harriet was widowed in 1870, 1880, & 1900 then the Jehiel who died in 1902 was not her husband. The Jehiel who is found in the Old Soldier's home in Grand Rapids in 1900 was admitted there 02 Mar 1886 so he should have been living elsewhere before that. There is one other Jehiel, living in 1880 in Fulton, Gratiot, age 57 b NY with a Musser family but could not find this Jehiel in any other census.
Maybe some of this will help a bit :) Vicky in AZ

Hello, I'm sorry I can't help you with the Helms', but I was wondering if you could give me some info on the McNutt's. My relative, Sidney, was Harriet's younger brother. I didn't know Harriet existed until I saw this post. She isn't on the family's 1850 census, (already married, so out of the house). I am searching for William and Elizabeth's parents and any other info I can find on the family. If you need anything on Sidney's ancestors, I can help though.

My mom was a Helms. I am working on her geneology as she has alzheimers. Jacob Helms was her great great grandfather and he was married to Temperance Story. It is listed on his death certificate.
|
It looks like my great great grandfather was Jacob Helms and his wife was Temperance. Their son was Samuel Helms, married to Mary (don't know her maiden name). They had many children: Celia, Walter, Ida, Loriel, Warner, Lottie, George, and my grandfather, Charles. I managed to find a link to take this family back to the mid-1500s!
|
jacob was my great great great grandfather. his son, david, is my great great grandfather. i too have found the line that goes back to the 1500's but these are not confirmed facts until you have documentation to confirm this. i found another line where people keep repeating the info without confirming it and there is a lot of wrong ancestors listed. at least they give you a guide for finding relatives, but do look for those death certificates, marriage licenses, and birth records for confirmation!
|
I saw the 1880 Census from the Mormon Church online which gives the NARA Film #, page #, entry # but doesn't have the actual film for Charles Helms born in Fulton, Gratiot,(or in Ithaca) Michigan to Samuel and Mary Helms in 1867. I think Mary's maiden name was Benton.
What I am finding from the Mormon Church might not be correct then? There are sure a lot of Helms in Fulton, Michigan! I wonder if I am related to any of them? Grandpa moved out west and I was his only grandchild so the name "Helms" stopped.
|
if you are getting info from the mormon church, that should be sufficient. it's the people that post their family tree you can use as a guide but it may not be right until you get the documentation to confirm it. i have found the helms from fulton are all related. my family is also from the fulton area. i grew up in a town about 10 miles away from there. if you go to findagrave.com you can search the graves of family members in the counties of Clinton, Ionia,Gratiot and Montcalm, here in Michigan. There is a Charles and Mrs Charles Helms buried in Portland Cemetery in Ionia county. Her name is Mary. The other Mary Helms in the cemetery is not Charles wife. They had a stillborn child, Clifton buried there also. I discovered this last night. but, i think that charles is the son of David Helms. it makes it hard as a lot of names are repeated in generations. who was your grandpa, charles? where did he move to? there is a lot of history for helms and they are some of the original settlers in michigan and in the united states.
