The markoes did have two sugar plantations on the Island of St. Croix. One is in Spanish Town. The Markoes Started in France. The last names had several spellings Marcou, Marcoux, Ect... They went to Denmark and changed the spelling of the name to a danish spelling to Markoe. From there they went to the Virgin Islands. My 5th Great Grandfather was the first Colonial Gov. Then my fourth Great Grandfather went to Philly PA and was first Captain of the Light Horse Troop. His son kept the Plantations running. The Markoes have a huge place in History. The First flag the have 13 stripes for the 13 colonies. It was presented to Gen. George Washington and carried in major battles in our history. (Germantown, Princeton, Crossing of The Delaware. So if you are looking up Markoe history, you have alot of homework. Something kind off funny My married name was Cooper... Oh and hello James Markoe in St. Paul. It is your first cousin "Weezie"

My 3rd great grandfather was Capt Abraham and you are right - much work to do regarding Markoe pre-US history. Most is based on the late 1800's account by Mary Hazlehurst Ashhurst (Capt Abe's granddaughter). Her account of the Philadelphia period is fairly well documented but questionable before that. See the Markoe message board on this site for examples.

Markoes were at two Spanishtowns: documented at the plantation on St. Croix 1744 but also documented on the island Spanishtown - which is one of Virgin Gorda's earlier names. There was a Peter Markoe there as early as 1718. Philip Markoe was Dep Gov there around 1737 and a Peter Markoe member of the council. Philip was son of Jan Markoe of Dutch St. Eustatius and brother to Jan Jr, who was provisional governor there 1736-1737. Also at St. Eustatius was a Peter Markoe who was there 1700. By 1715 he had a fairly large family but then was lost from sight. I suspect he is Peter of 1718 Spanishtown - who remains unidentified. He's certainly not the father of Capt Abe. Etc Etc.

The link to France has never been found.

With the advent of the internet much new information is surfacing and it would be interesting to see how much of the traditional history needs updating.

One tantalizing piece from the internet is the possibility that Capt Abe's mother was not Elizabeth Ferrall! Elizabeth yes but not a born Ferrall. Very good possibility she was Elizabeth Cunningham, married Peter Markoe who died 1747 - but then married Mathias Ferral and thus was Mrs. Ferrall at her death. If this is proven then all the pre-US history is up for grabs.

I'd love to contact anyone who's interested in taking a fresh look.
