If you are attempting to find a church for the sake of partaking of the religious experience, good, I wish you the best of luck. I fear, however, that you simply wish to have this list for some type of news story or proposed book that would focus on "strange mountain cults" or something of the sort. Remember that what you view as research others may see as intrusion. Unless you are invited, you are not given liscence to disturb other people's lives to satisfy your curiosity or further your career.

Hi William and All, Thank you for your message and thanks to all our listers who wrote me off list. I agree with you on this matter 100%. Are you kin to the Bowling family of Elliott Co. KY; the descendants of Jarrett Bowling and Nancy Vansant Bowling? I have much info to share on their lines. Thank you, Ramona

I recently completed a project in an Appalachian Literature class regarding the religious tradition of serpent handling and history of. I was able to speak with Rev. Jimmy Morrow of Newport TN and attend one of the services at the church he pastors located in the community of Edwina that still practices "with signs following". He welcomes everyone and the church is located off interstate 40 at exit 440; turn right and pass the truck stop and look for either the first or second green road sign on the right (about 1/4 mi. past truck stop). The church sign will be located below the road sign. Turn onto this road and keep left; you will see the church up in the hollow. Services are held every Saturday and Sunday evening at 7pm. THe church is spirit filled and welcomes all. Enjoy!
ps: I think the name of the road is Picnic Drive.

I am responding to Zonya Harris's account of attending the church in New Port, TN. I was wondering if you knew of any other churches in the TN/Ar. regions that still practiced with signs following. Being raised in "charasmatic" churches, I am very interested in the Signs churches. Please email me if you know of any. Thanx.

This is the only church that I know of in this region that practices serpent handling. In conversations with Rev. Morrow, I know that he also attends many services at several churches in Kentucky; however, these folks have been persecuted for their strict interpretation of the scriptures and are reluctant to devulge the locations of the churches, as you can understand. Even though I do not interpret the scriptures as they do regarding the 'signs', I have great respect for the members of this practice and in no way attempt to pass judgment upon their convictions. If you wish to attend one of the Edwina services and upon befriending Rev. Morrow, he would be able to help you with this information. He has offered to allow me to accompany him and his wife when they visit a service in Kentucky; however, I have not had the chance to attend and further my work and research on this subject at this time. I am a 46 yr old that has attended the Serpent handling Churches since age 16. I have handled serpents even though I am Roman Catholic. I first found out about the Church in Huntington West Virginia in 1972. Even though I am not a believer in the practice I do enjoy the services. I have been to the Jolo Church many times and have several friends there including Rev. Elkins and Dewy Chaffins. I am currently a Roman Catholic Priests and teach Catholicism to the New Priests. I find my information on fundamentalism has been a very valuable tool. Sincely Father Larry
