The only Francois Zenon Boutte I know of left no heirs. It is his oil rights that was disputed. Zenon was b. Feb 13, 1785 St. Martin Parish, s/o Antoine Boutte Marie Francoise Hyacinthe Degruy. He married Jan 23, 1809 to Marie Aspasie Descuirs. His children died in infancy/childhood, from what I understand.

I am in the process of during research on the Provost and have been curious about the Bouttes. Is there any records of them fighting with Jean Lafitte in the Battle of New Orleans

I am a descendant of Marie Louise Hyacinthe Boutte Judice, as well. I have an original copy of the Louisiana State Mineral Board Trust for the Gonsoulin Heirs. There may be names and address and other information in it that would be of value to you. As a family story goes, Jean Lafitte and Dominique You were 2 of the older Boutte boys. Please e-mail me privately if you would like to continue this conversation. Cynthia DeCoux Stone

I was told that they were the same person but I have information that the father came from France as a soldier. I was also told that someone was trying to prove that they were the same people. I just was curious about the whole thing. I would like to read the settlement on the oil thing. My mother received a check once for $8 I do not think we have to worry about getting rich. Katherine

I had read about this in the Terrebonne genealogical magazine a couple of years ago. I don't know if it has been proved or not. Some people say it isn't so but some do. You could check Terrebonne Life Lines (their magazine) and see for yourself. I found it interesting. The Boutte family is connected to my lines through the Verret and Patin family.

What I have comes from the research done for the oil lease business, and states that the first Boutte' in this line was Claude Boutte' who was born in Paris abt. 1670 married Jeanne Ferle Born in Paris in 1679 and died in 1724. the other 1/2 of the family (this from the book Old Mobile") was Nicholas Bodin "Miragouine" who came from France in 1707 and was granted land on what was then known as Mon. Louis Island. He married Francois Paillet (y??) and their daughter, Francos Bodin (Miragouine) then married Andre Claude Boutte'. The line goes from there. According to the "Journal of Jean Lafitte" (purchaced by Gov. Price Daniels and the orig is now in the Sam Houston Library) Lafitte was born in Port Au Prince on April 22, 1783. He states that he was raised by his grandmother and that he had 2 brothers and an uncle that worked with him. Francois Zenon was born in St Martinville on Feb 13, 1785. Point being that they certainly were very close to the same ages. There are also quite a few Boutte' births listed as born on Baratarria Island. Kind of curious. As far as the oil documents, I do have a copy, but have no idea what company has the rights now. I would love to find out as I have always wanted to paper my room with the checks!! If anyone has that info please pass it on. Thanks

Well I have the information you need, but I have been trying to find out who was ripping it off for the previous years. My mother and her brorther (now deceased) where the oldest living heirs. In the 1950s Shell oil and an attorney John Cobb of Gretna contacted all heirs (everybody and their distant cousins) which was not how it is done, and each person hired him as their attorney to protect their claim--this was intended to make him rich in attorney's fees and because the fees from so many ended up being more than the royalties he would have taken the property for nonpayment of fees. The state of Louisiana came to the rescue and stopped all activities and John Cobb's scam. No one could touch it or drill without the consent of the state of LA. Now my uncle and my mom (who trusted my uncle's attorny if he really consulted with one) signed a lease with Shell oil --at least three years ago and have not seen a dime. My mom said she did not know they should have paid her for the lease (she is 88 yrs. old). I have the map and letter from Shell oil --I am going to try and get some information' PS I would love to find out where to locate the family tree.

Zenon fought with Lafitte--it is my understanding or what I was told by family that zenon was his 1st mate also they may have been brothers ==some have told me that Zenon was the brother to Lafitte's wife. The family at the time he was alive i am sure made up- stories to protect them because Lafitte was an alias name. I was told when he came into this area (Sunset/ Grand Coteau) he would come down the bayou and sneek on land at Cretien Point. I was never clear about Zenon and Lafitte being one and the same.

I have a lot of information on the Provost side of the family. There is a lady in Houma, LA that had some of the original contracts from the lawyer, Cobb and I thought that he was out for all he could get. She also said that shell had a drilling lease on the land but they had not gotten anything from them in a long time. Our family is probably not on their list as all our parents have passed away. Of course they could find them if they try. I also have other info on some of the Judices that married Provost if you want any of this I can send it to you. Katherine

Please contact me personally. I can make a copy of the book for you, it has all the names and addresses of heirs alive at the time the settlement was made. Could come in quite handy for research. I have a small original one that was given to my Dad, but the copy I offer to make for you is from the original in St. Martinsville Courthouse. Cost of copying @ Kinko's + $4 Priority mailing.

That is always the story that I heard passed down was that he was the First Mate to Jean Lafitte. My great grandmother recieved checks from the estate as a Boutte descendent. It was only recently that I heard that they could be the same person. Is it known where this idea started?? I have read that Jean Lafitte told different stories of his origins to different people. This would make sense since this name was an alias. He certainly would not give away his true details. For those that absolutely say they are not the same person- what makes them so concretely sure he is not? According to Judicial Records, two Boutte brothers (Louis Hilaire and Jean Baptiste) (sons of Antoine and Hyacinthe DeGruy) purchased Barataria Island from the heirs of Sieur Pierre Lavigne on July 8, 1805. Francois Zenon, a nephew of the 2 brothers, aquired Hilaire's half of the land. He died with no living heirs (one child died at birth and another died at the age of 7). So his estate was divided among the descendents of his siblings (my Ggrandmother being one of these many). Many accounts of Jean Lafitte talk about a brother named Pierre- is it possible that Jean-Baptiste could be this brother, who also could have taken on an identity of his own?

My Great Grandmother was a Marie Boutte born June 30 1874. (I am pretty certain about the year, from what I remember from seeing the grave in Arnaudville) She was married to a Horace Meche. I don't know if this is the same person or maybe an aunt or my great great grandmother.

Zenon's niece Marie Boutte was my great grandmother. My grandfather recieved a check from the oil royalties settlement some time before I was born, 1964. One thing we can be sure of is that Zenon was the owner of land in Baritaria. Lafitte's base of operations was in Baritaria at the time of the battel of New Orleans. If court documents can prove that Zenon owned the land at the same time Lafitte was there then we can only assume that he at least knew of Lafitte's presence there. If anyone has anything more solid then please let me know.
