Snell/McManus Family, Mono Township

Classification: Query

Surnames: Snell, McManus, Scott, Knox, Speers, Babe, Jamieson, McMaster, Mercer
Looking for any additional information on family of George Snell b1798 and Ellen McManus b1801 who emigrated from Co. Cavan, Ireland to Mono Township, Ontarion in the 1820's.

George McManus (brother-in-law and prominent County figure) emigrated with them and was their next door neighbour on the same lot (L2 C8 -McManus S1/2, Snell N1/2).

Particular interest in sons George b1824 (m. Jane Scott), William b1829 (m. Elizabeth Scott), and James b1840 (m. Martha Mercer). Missing information on families of 5 other sons and 2 daughters, as well. No information on Scott family(s) mentioned above.

Any bit helps. Lots to share.

Hi James,

I do not know the people you are referring to,however,I have some E-mail addresses which might help you in your search.www.rootsweb.com/~nytryon/palatine.html has a very good article on the Palatine Haritage of Tryon County,N.Y. The Snells that immigrated to that area and have spread all over were the Palatine's from the Rhine Valley who left in 1709. There were also a large number who immigrated to Ireland at the same time. I believe Cyndi's list can give you more info on the Irish Palatines. Good Luck! Kathleen Snell

Noticed your message - then later was working on the 1861 Census for Mono Twp. and found the following entry.
I take it to read that William Duke, his wife Seragh and William Babe lived together in the same dwelling, with William Babe as hired man. You don't mention given names, but
Note that this enumerator listed EVERY entry in the census as Occupation, Yeoman (except for specific notations such as Minister, Sawyer, etc.) - unlike other census takers, he does not use the term "Farmer". I can't imagine what he thought all those yeomen were doing, sitting about on their homesteads, in that farming community! ;->
I have found children as young as 7 identified as Labourers - I imagine that it meant simply that they worked the family farm with their older brothers and parents or worked for modest wages on neighbouring farms! Many of my family seemed to appear on adjacent properties as labourers, not family members, so I have learned to look for that connection.
I also found that this enumerator spelled every instance of the name Sara or Sarah - which seemed to be extremely popular in that period! in this one way as "Seragh". I have not found this spelling elsewhere in this Census, and it has been suggested to me that it emulates the Gaelic. This might have some significance if you are tracing Seragh Duke!

Details follow:

ENUMERATION DISTRICT NO.1 OF THE TOWNSHIP OF MONO IN THE COUNTY OF SIMCOE.

Marsha, I believe that your branch of the Babe family descended from Hoshea Babe (b. 1856) and Ann Holmes who were from Aghory.

I'm connected to the Mercer family and may be of a some assistance.

I have Martha M. Mercer married to James Snell around 1864. As well I have 5 children mentioned Ella; Enoch James; Barbara; Mary; and Polly. Also have her obit.

Martha's parents were Robert and Mary (nee Anderson) Mercer from Adjala Twp. Simcoe Co. They are originally from Ireland.

I also have info on Martha's siblings if you're interested.
