I am looking for the identity of the gentleman referred to in The Old Northwest genealogist quarterly, on page 33 of 49 pages which reads as follows:

"at Saratoga, Monmouth, and Yorkiown."

"After the battle of Monmouth he visited his home and married Irene Reid."

"After the close of the war he lived in Conn, till 1795 when he removedd to N.Y, and purchased a large tract of land on the Unudilla River, Chenango Co., N.Y. . . . "

There was an Irene Reid that married a Nathan Carpenter on 1 Feb 1781 in Tollan, CT who might be a possibility.

Hello,

I was just look for another family in census records, so I thought I would look for Nathan CARPENTER in 1790 in CT. I find him, possibly with a wife and children:

CARPENTER, NATHAN (1790 U.S. Census)
CONNECTICUT , TOLLAND, STAFFORD
Series: M637 Roll: 1 Page: 186

(I think there is a John CARPENTER living beside them.)

There are 23 CARPENTER households in Tolland Co., CT, in 1790. About the same in 1800.

CARPENTER, NATHAN (1800 U.S. Census)
CONNECTICUT , TOLLAND, STAFFORD
Series: M32 Roll: 2 Page: 634

But, I see this, seemingly a widow or divorcee with young children:

CARPENTER, IRENE (1800 U.S. Census)
CONNECTICUT , TOLLAND, SOMERS
Series: M32 Roll: 2 Page: 657

CARPENTER, NATHAN (1810 U.S. Census)
CONNECTICUT , TOLLAND, STAFFORD
Series: M252 Roll: 3 Page: 205

In 1820 there is no Nathan CARPENTER, but there is one in NY, VT, and ME.

In 1790 there is no REID in CT, but there are a few in NY.

At www.familysearch.org the marriage is listed this way:

Nathan Carpentor
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Irene Reed
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 01 Feb 1781
Marriage Place: Willington, Tolland, Connecticut, United States
Groom's Father's Name:

But, there is also an Irene REID marrying in CT to:

Groom's Name: John Brockway
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Irene Reed
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 18 Jul 1810
Marriage Place: Connecticut

Is it possible the same Irene had 2 marriages in CT?

You would need more information on both Nathan CARPENTER and John BROCKWAY to find out where they came from.

However, at HeritageQuest, there are about 30 BROCKWAY households in CT in 1790, with most in New London. About the same for 1800, 1810, and 1820.

Hi,

I had a look about and found this information - mostly from a family Tree on Ancestry.com- there is a Historical marker at a church that gives the information that matches what you found in the article - it states Nathan was the first colonial settler in Delaware County, fought in Bunker Hill, and was wounded. He married Irene REID,1781 moved to NY in 1785 , then bought 520 acres in Ohio State for $1,500. The family then left NY for Pittsburgh in Feb 1801 and floated down the Ohio River and used keel boats to go up the Scioto River. They arrived 01 May 1801 at their new home in Liberty Township, just north of the Liberty Presbyterian Church ( where the plaque is). Nathan built a stone springhouse on his farm and in 1804, built the first mill in Delaware County, used for sawing wood and grinding grain. He died 1814 and is buried at Marycrest the family farm

Actually,( just found it!!) the info is online via google:

I thought the Irene Reid I was looking for might be the same woman. But it does not appear that my Irene Reid fits the bill. My Irene Reid is the daughter of Moses Read, UEL, and Rebecca Pratt. She married a John Smith, Sgt. in Edward Jessop's Corps, also UEL. I am also trying to find out if he is the same John Smith in the records as a military claimant, Sgt. in Edward Jessop's Corps, who lived in Crown Point New York at the time the Revolution broke out. He had a daughter named Rebecca who married an Amos Deming, s/o Prosper Deming, Rebel/Patroit that fought at Ticonderoga and Saratoga, and was with the Continental Army, and his wife, Alice Graves of Connecticut or Massachussetts. The Reads and the Smiths came to Canada about 1784, I think. The Demings may have come to Canada later, following their UEL friends.
