I am looking for information on John Lyde & family. He was my grgreatgrandfather. I've been told that the family owned a plantation in Birmingham & left for TX after the Civil War. Some of the family went to OK; there are still Lydes in Hobart, Kiowa Co, OK. I'd be delighted ot hear from anyone with further info on the family. Terri Stewart

Richard,
The only info I have about John Lyde is the little I've heard from my Great Aunt. He had a plantation in the Birmingham, Al area. Sometime after the Civil War, he moved most of his family to Texas; the 2 oldest daughters were left with some of the extended family that remained in Al because Texas was considered no place to bring up young ladies properly. My Great Granny, Julia Florence Lyde, was a baby so she & some of her brothers made the trip. I think they went ot Montague Co. The family ended up in Kiowa Co, Ok in the Hobart area. I don't know if that's where Great Granny met & married Great Granddad Shibley Henry Royal or if that happened in Montague Co, Tx where I know the Royals lived. I know for sure that they had 10 children, 2 sons & 8 daughters. I don't even know the name of John's wife or how many children were in the family, but would love to learn more about them. Do you think we're related to the same John Lyde? I look forward to hearing from you.
Terri

Terri,
I have John Jay Lyde and wife's Julia death certificates if you would like a copy of them i could mail them to you if you would like. One thing on the Death Certificate thats alittle strange is that Julia his wife put that he was born in South Carolina and not Alabama. Thats about all I know!
Cousin,
Richard

my side of the family tells that they left Mt. Meigs after the civil war, traveling in a covered wagon, all they had left of the plantation was the family silver and they settled in Montague Co. Texas. later the family went to Oklahoma when it was opened for settlement.
