Is anyone out there researching the West line from Israel or William West, members of the New Jersey Volunteers Loyalist?? The Wests went to New Brunswick, Canada in 1783 from New York on the ship "Duke of Richmond". Were granted land up the Saint John River in the Kingsclear area in 1784. Am looking for any connection that I can find, any help greatly appreciated. If you have any info will trade--I have over 1,000 descendents listed.

Hi Pauline - My reply might be a long shot but I noticed your posting about Israel or William WEST coming to the Kingsclear area of New Brunswick, Canada in 1783 and I was wondering if any of their descendants ever moved later to the Middlesex (Lobo Township) or Oxford (South Norwich Township) counties of Ontario (ON), Canada?

My ggrandmother was the daughter of George & Maria WEST from Unknown:

Mary Maria WEST 1859 - 1924
b. 19 Aug 1859 Lobo Twp, Middlesex Cty, Canada West
m. 31 Oct 1887 Strathroy, Middlesex Cty, ON

Microfilm # MS935 & Reel # 316, Reg. # 024424-1924

My ggrandfather was the son of Christian or Christmas & Maria WALKER from England:

William WALKER 1859 - 1930
b. 25 Dec 1859 England
m: 31 Oct 1887 Strathroy, Middlesex Cty, ON

My grandparents Mary Maria WEST and William WALKER Marriage Registration information who were mentioned above was recorded as follows:

Schedule B. - Marriages

Mary Maria WEST, 28 years, Mount Brydges, Ontario, Spinster

Date and Place of Marriage: 31 Oct 1887 at Strathroy, Middlesex Cty, Ontario
Religion of Bridgroom & Bride: Baptist & Methodist
By whom Married: Rev. E. MIDDLESON by License - L

Please check your WEST descendents database list to see if we have any connections as it sure would be nice to correspond with you in the future.

I also noticed that you had a Cronkheit or Cronkhite in your surnames listing with your posting. This is interesting also since these surnames and my surname Cronkwright, Cronkrite, Conkwright and Cronkwrite are reported to be linked to Jacobus Crankheyt or Krankheyt.

There are quite a few spelling variations on the husband's surname mentioned above as follows: Conkright, Conkwright, Cronk, Cronkhite, Cronkite, Cronkrite, Cronkright, Cronkwright, Crankheyt/Krankheyt, Konkwright/Kronkwright; and a lot of these names were all used interchangeably on the various vital statistics records for the same person, dependent on the recorder's/registrar's interpretation of how the name sounded when it was spoken/related to him/her.

The following 2 message board links help to explain the interchangeably variations of the Conkwright and Cronkwright surnames:

Gerald Cronkwright---thank you for replying so soon. My line is: Israel or William West, members New Jersey Volunteers Loyalist, shipped to Saint John, Nova Scotia, 1783 Fall Fleet. Granted land up the river at Kingsclear 1784. A son of one if them--we do not know which one--Edward, b 1789 married Sarah Barker 1822: children: William 1826-1873;marrried, date unknown at this time, Ester Jewel Miller,1831-1904. Could there be any possible link to my ggggrandpa Peter West m. Phoebe Jane Acker born about 1808. My Grandpa tried and tried,... so have other decendants to get back further than him. He lived in Ontario, Canada. He is supposed to be a Loyalist,... but I have no idea where he lived before Canada. Being that my gggrandpa, his son was named Edward Wood West(born in Toronto in 1834), I have thought maybe he was named after a famous general that could lead some clues(showing who his father admired),... or possible that there was a Wood type name in the tree somewhere for which he was named.

GerWill7881 In going thru some old files I came across your message. If I did not reply at the time I appologize. As far as I can tell our West lines do not meet. Not sure just when my Wests came from England but they were in New Jersey before 1773, we think in Marmouth (sp) County. That is where William & Israel West joined the New Jersey Volunteers Loyalists. We do not have any record of any of our Wests going to Western Canada. My grandfather and some of his brothers, cousins, etc. did go to the Central California coast region in the late 1870s. They worked in logging in the redwoods in Santa Cruz county and later in the powder works in that area.
Good luck in your quest.
PS have you done any thing with your family DNA? We are thinking we should submit ours to see if we can come up with a match. I would be interested in knowing what you find out about your West line.

I do appologize for not replying sooner--my only excuse is thaat my husband has been sick since I posted my query & have not had time to do any research at all. He is in a care home now so that I do have some spare time. As far as I can tell there is not connection between your West families. The Cronkite connection is: Mahetable West, dof Edward West married Asa Cronkite, they had a son Asa Jr. who had a son Duane, who had a son also Duane, who also had a son Duane to bring us to the current generation. But I have not been able to find any of the Duanes.
Hope you will forgive my tardiness and good luck on your search.
