I am hoping that someone might be able to decipher the handwriting on this census document - I believe that the couple, James Basing and wife Emily, may possibly be my biological great-great grandparents and am interested in being able to read this document as I believe it might hold the key for further research and indeed, discovering my great-great grandparent's history. Please do not hesitate to send me a private message for further information about this request. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Whilst I'm able to discern certain information such as names, I believe place of birth and home address might play a role in helping me to further my research.

I think it says he is a caretaker from Basingstoke,Hants and he is living at Kepwick, 6m north of Thirsk in Yorkshire.
There is a Hall at Kepwick which might be where he is living

On findmypast they say he is living at Kepwick Park Hall

Thanks kindly for the assistance - this at least gives me a possible location, although if these people are those I am searching for, it would appear that they moved in the 2 years between their daughter's birth and the time of this census. I also ask specifically for Emily's occupation and also wonder: with 3 servants, would it be fair to say this family was well off? If so, it only confuses me more - if these individuals were my great-great grandparents, why would they place my great-grandmother up for adoption?

I think they were servants to the hall not to James Basing who as a caretaker is an employee of the hall so they probably were not that well off.
Emily's job was Caretakers wife

Thanks - if this were them, it would certainly explain why they might have given their child up for adoption, as difficult as that decision would be.

According to records my aunt once discovered, James was also employed as a gardener at some point in time, although I am not sure exactly when. She states that records (I presume census records) indicate he was living with a family and employed to maintain their garden - I can only assume this would have been prior to meeting Emily, but I do not know as I've failed to turn up this record myself.

Emma and Emily, could be the same.
The difference in age between James and Emma/Emily is the same in both censuses.

But were they married?

Wow! This could possibly be them. I approximate the James would have been born 1850 thereabouts, and Emily 1860 - 65, in accordance with the ages provided on their daughter Blanch(e)'s birth / marriage certificates. I estimate that Emily would have been born about 64 - 65 to match up with the ages provided on these certificates and although the date given for James would suggest he were a few years younger than listed on these documents, it's altogether possible his age was transcribed incorrectly. Would you mind giving me a link to this census record? Maybe these two are my great-great grandparents - who knows for certain? But still, gives me something else to look into and follow through on. Thanks for much once again - your help has been invaluable.
