Sophronia Mulley, 1803-1898 Lansingburgh, Rennselaer, Nurse

Born 1803 in Maine, widowed before 1850, Sophronia Mulley was a nurse in Lansingburgh in the 1860s and 1870s. We believe she was the sister of John White ( from 1850c and family records). Can anyone find information about her as a White before she marries a Mulley? She lived to be 94 years old,...her last years spent at the Powers Home for Aged Women in Lansingburgh. She is interred in Oakwood. In 1880 she was in the census in the home of Jesse Spicer (Lansingburgh) along with a Catherine Spicer (wife), and a Margaret Son, listed at age 87 as a mother-in-law. Sophronia is listed as a sister at age 77, so perhaps that means she was a sister to Mrs. Son? This is a puzzle. Please help solve it! Thanks, Janice

I found an obit for a Norman Mulley who I think may be a son of this Sophronia Mulley. Are you interested in it?

Yes thank you. We would like to see that obituary. Where is it from? We know little about Sophronia other than that she was supposedly a sister of John White. Please post the obit. here or if you prefer, send it to my email: darmorenus@yahoo.com, and put Sophronia in the subject line so I will recognize it.

Thank you so much. Janice

I'm not sure he is her son[d 1894] but here is what I found--on his obit he is survived by his mother-Sophronia Mulley-91 years old-living in Stuyvesant.

On the Oakwood Cemetery records Sophronia Mulley is listed as dying 25 Jan 1898 at 94 years-4 months at Stuyvesant. It looks like they are mother and son.

Go to this newspaper site and search in quotes as I have it--selecting--all of the words--don't check anything below the search line www.fultonhistory.com

"Norman * Mulley"
#2 His notice of death

There will be three articles #1 and #3 refer to the same person. Perhaps he is connected somehow to this Norman W Mulley. Perhaps a grandson--Not sure, though.

These may ?? be the census records for Norman

1850-Kentucky Carroll County
Norman W 28
Alice 20
Norman H 2

1860 New York Richmond County
Norman 36
Alice 30
Henry 12

1880 Census New York Orange County
Norman 58
Alice 50

Thank you so much. By using Norman Mully in Ancestry I confirmed his mother was Sophronia but I never saw where his obituary named her? May I ask where you saw this...in the newspaper article you suggested #2 Old Fulton New York did not name her. Did you see another obituary? Working from the census material I know Norman was born in NY in 1822 so husband of Sophronia had to be alive and in the 1880 census Norman states his father came from England. In the 1830 census (when Norman would be about 8) there was a Jeremiah Mully in Troy, Renssalear, NY which I am researching....Sophronia and all the John White family lived in that area in later censuses. Jeremiah Mully is not there in 1840; (nor anywhere else...dead?) also I am trying immigration records for Jeremiah, but so far no luck. Please continue with your good research and thank you, Janice. I look forward to your reply!

Sorry--I thought the obits were the same. Go to the newspaper site and search

"Sophronia Mulley"
The only article is the death of Norman listing Sophronia Mulley as his mother.

Just in case you don't find it

New York NY Sun Friday 5 Oct 1894

Norman W Mulley of Port Jervis died yesterday morning of dropsy and heart failure, aged 72 years. He was born in 1821 and received a collegiate education. He resided on Staten Island for many years and was superintendent of the public schools at Tompkinsville. When the war broke out he was living on his plantation in Arkansas. He returned to Staten Island and enlisted in the Seventy-eighth New York Regiment and was Captain of Company B. He was Town Clerk, and for many years until his death, a Justice of the Peace. His mother, Mrs Sophronia Mulley, is living at Stuyvesant, NY at the age of 91.

I thought the obits were the same--I guess I didn't read the other one. Sorry about the error.

Just a thought--The middle initial for Norman is W--perhaps that stands for WHITE.

Thanks again. I have found that Jeremiah Mully did marry Sophronia White. It was in an online book with documentation that is credible. And Sophronia White had a brother John so it all fits perfectly. BUT I still cannot find where/when Jeremiah Mully entered this country or where he and Sophronia White married. I would assume the marriage was in New York state, because their son born in 1822 (Norman) was born on Staten Island. Any ideas?
