Ellen Murphy of Emily Twp (1825?-1891)

Ellen Murphy of Emily Twp (1825?-1891)

Ellen Murphy married Thomas Houlihan on 19 Oct 1845 according to church records of Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary RC Chuch in Lindsay. No parents or ages were recorded and she was "of Emily." Her age in census records between 1851 & 1891 implies she was born sometime in the 1820s. Ellen died on 8 Nov 1891 and her death registration claims she was 66 at the time. Private correspondence claims she and her husband are buried in the Downeyville cemetery. I can't find a reference to them in the transcription of the St. Luke's Cemetery. If she was a Peter Robinson Irish, then there are two sets of candidates for her parents: Jeremiah & Susan Murphy of Emily or Patrick & Ellen Murphy of Ennismore. Any help identifying her parents would be appreciated.

Have you looked for the births of her children and any brother's or sister's children in St. Mary's records? Very often godparents were family and possibly one of her parents may have been. She could also have been a godparent to one of her brother's or sister's children which could led back to her parents.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll start the process to borrow the film and see if it leads to any new clues.

Hi Roger,

Not sure if this helps or not, however I have a copy of the Downeyville Pioneer Cemetery (lot 5, concession 10, Emily Township) transcripts. Within the transcriptions record 52 reads as follows:

Thomas HOULIHAN / died Dec. 6, 1889 / aged 71 years / also his wife / Ellen / who died Nov. 8, 1891 / aged 66 years

You may want to also contact Sharon Ferguson who has been posting on the Peterborough County website lately she has a fair amount of information on the Ennismore Murphy's.

Good luck with your search.

Kathleen

Thank you. The information agrees with the dates in the family Bible from my great grandfather (one of their sons). And I have a more official name for the cemetery.

Her parents were not Patrick and Ellen of Ennimsore. I am descendant of them and they did have a daughter Ellen, but she married a Shanahan in Ennismore.

Thank you. That eliminates one family from the search.

Have you ever found more on your Murphy in Emily? She was not part of Jeremiah and Susan on the Brunswick. They are my ancestors and did not have any daughters that I know of. Jeremiah was first married to Susan (had two sons), he remarried Eliza Lines (also on the Brunswick) after Susan died and they had three more sons.

I should not have jumped to the conclusion they were not part of Jeremiah's family so quickly. I was unaware of any daughters born to him with his first wife Susan, or second wife Eliza Lines. Further research shows there were in fact 4 females under 16 in his household in the 1841 census. I have idea who they are and know nothing about them. I wonder if one of them is your Ellen? :-) Census is here http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/emily/emily1841.txt

No, I haven't been able to make any more progress on the Murphy lineage. All the evidence I've been able to gather seems to point to Jeremiah Murphy as her father. He was the only Murphy living in Emily Twp in 1841 and the 1845 marriage record indicated she was "of Emily." The first Murphy daughter was born between 1827 & 1830. The Murphy farm was not too far from the Houlihan farm. Interesting enough, Jeremiah is not in the 1851 census and the Murphy farm is not recorded in the census. I have a transcript of the baptismal records for her middle children, but the sponsors surnames haven't provided any clues towards the Murphy connection. I haven't found any records for the first three children though.
