The names are more than likely:
OSTAFEYCHUK/OSTAFEYCZUK
ОСТАФІЙЧУК
WYNOHRADNYK
ВИНОГРАДНИК
Both of the above families are listed in the Ivano-Frankivs'k phone directory. Sniatyn is located close to the city of Ivano-Frankivs'k.

My grandmother, Apolonija Wynohradnyk, was born in 1894 in Sniatyn, Galicia. She immigrated to the US in 1912 from Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Manitou and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts. She traveled with her aunt and young cousin (Anna and Michal Koyulkiewicz). Her family remained in Europe.

I know that she had at least two older brothers, one who I believe moved to France. Her father's name was Jan and her mother's name was Catherine (Katarzina). I would appreciate any assistance in trying to gather info on my grandmother's life in Sniatyn.

Hi !

I'm afraid I have drawn a blank with my research on Wynohradnyk and know as much as you do. I know my grandfather has a brother that settled in New York, but that's about it. I think I can point you in the right direction with regards to Wynohradnyk's in France: Do a Google search in the name. There is a doctor in France with the last name Wynohradnyk. I've never gotten around to sending that person an e-mail to see if they know any Wynohradnyk history.

Good Luck! Please keep me posted if you have any better luck than I have.

Steve

Thank you very, very much. This gives me a whole new promising direction.

I found it quite interesting that Wynohradnyk's were Ruthenians per Ellis Island records. I was able to find the records of my grandmother's arrival in Boston. She traveled with her widowed aunt (her father's sister) and cousin. According to the ship's manifest, she indicated that she was Polish. Her aunt and cousin, however, indicated they were Ruthenians. Is it possible that her aunt took the ethnic background of her deceased husband....or was my grandmother in fact Ruthenian but consedered herself Polish because Sniatyn was part of Poland at the time she lived there.

Again, thank you very much.
