Hi Susan, I am a Portner from the Thurmont(Mechancistown) area.My great grandparents were Issac Franklin & Sophia Portner. I can tell you your John M. was not a child of theirs. Although there were 13 children born to them. The last child of theirs was my grandfather, Harry Steiner Portner. I'll try to find out some info. for you. Even though we have a large family in this area.Only a small percent of older are still alive. Let me know if you need anyother info from me.

Surnames: Portner, Need, Schroyer
I am descended from Susan Portner (brother Isaac Portner, parents John Portner and Elizabeth Schroyer). They were from Frederick Co., MD. My gr grandfather, William H. Need was born to Susan Portner in Mechanicstown. I have pictures of John Milford Portner who I think is the son of Isaac Portner, of Susan Portner, and of her son William Henry Need. They all look very Native American. Different branches of the family have family lore which says they were Cherokee, Algonquin, and Shawnee. I am trying to pin down the Indian connection. I would be glad to share info.
