My GG grandfather, Jonathan Barker, was in this unit from 1862-1865. He is listed as a "pilot". What is a pilot? Where can I find more information on this unit - where it was sent, battles fought, etc.? Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my first message to this list. Thanks, Sandy

A "pilot" could be a number of different things.

A "Pilot" could be the man who guided boats and ships into harbors, or up and down rivers, especially the Mississippi River.

A civilian was sometimes referred to as a "pilot" if they engaged in guiding refugees from the Confederate States, especially slaves or former slaves.

Thanks for your response. However, Jonathan Barker, my great grandfather is listed as a pilot by the military and he was in the artillery unit so I don't believe he had anything to do with ships or guiding refugees.

Thanks again.

Hi, Sandra.

My gg grandfather, John G. Warren, was also in the 8th Wis Lt Art. I have been trying to just find out more information about the unit, and in particular if anyone has a picture of it. If you have anything I would appreciate hearing about it.

Mike,
I have no pictures of my ggrandfather during the civil war - just one when he was much older.

Have you had any success in finding any civil war photos or any other information about this unit?

Thanks,
Sandy

Is this post still good? I have much information on this unit. I'm also looking for pictures and information on individuals.
