I don't know if this will help but I also am starting to track a Winters Family Tree. My father Raymond T. Winters had a brother named Chester Winters who wife was named Thelma. My dad was from Mississippi and his father was named Henry T. Winters married to Elizabeth Pate of Elloit Mississippi. Thats about all I know for now.

I am looking for my grandfather, William "Webb" Winters. He married Bertha (Self, I think) and they had 7 children that lived. Any info would be helpful. I know he would have been born in the late 1910s - 1920s. Thanks.

Winters in Choctaw Attala Co. MS

I am an Af-Am doing so novice research on our family history. Members of my family still live in the Choctow/Attala area. Several years ago I did note a John Winters married to an Elizabeth in Attala Co, MS. and a John A Winters also married to an Elizabeth. This is in Attala county, the neighboring county to Choctaw. The MS Census schedule for 1860 lists there names along with 2 young female members of the household. That is AFTER the 1854 date you noted. This might help you some.

Donald re John Allen Winters

I can't believe I found this. John Allen Winters is also my wifes GGGrandfather. Our information shows he was born 1-7-1829 in GA and died in Crawley, LA. He married Elizabeth Cheek/Check 2-12,1852. She was born 4-14-1828 in AL and died in Crawley, LA. Their daughter, Mary Jane Winters, born 4-28-1858, married John Alexander Daves 2-12-1877 in Choctaw Co. My wife remembers her father telling that his grandmother(Mary Jane) was half Indian and that she was a midwife. That would mean that either John Allen Winters or Elizabeth Cheek would be full blood Indian. Everyone had assumes that it was Elizabeth but recent information points to John Allen as being full blood Indian. We are trying to verify this and find out what tribe. Also there is some confusion over whether it is Cheek or Check. Please e-mail me at wallyarn@hotmail.com

K C, I saw your message and wonder if you might be able to give me any insight into researching African- American's in Attala Co? Mine are Ben & Cato Ayers. Ben and June had three children Sukey, Tildia, Lewis. Cato and Mary had Casamore, Julius, Lucy. Might you be able to direct me to any black cemetaries in Attala or Holmes Co? I do know these ( I Believe) are the ex-slaves of a Lansford Ayers Ayres of Attala Co, MS. Thanks Shelby dddmdoss@cs.com
