Can anyone enlighten me what is meant, or where the place of birth may be, when given as L B?

L B? I can't work it out.

Thanks for ANY insight.

Karen

Hi Karen,

If it's handwritten, could it be "U K" by any chance? If so, it means "unknown".

Christine

Update: Karen - please disregard this post; as Bryan points out, "NK" is the term used, meaning "Not Known". I knew this, but had a memory failure!

Are you looking at a birth certificate or an entry in the census or the free birth indexes?

Karen

Quite a common thing in censuses is "NB" which means "North Briton" which these days we would call Scotland.

When composing a message you will see down the bottom a line which says "Attachments: Attach a file"

That's how you attach an image such as the one I have attached using the Windows 7 Snipping Tool.

Bryan
PS
Christine - I've never come across "UK" for "Unknown" so that's a new one for me. I have seen "NK" for "Not Known"

Bryan,

You're quite right, I think I had a pre-senior moment. I'll edit my previous post. :-)

It would be easiest to help if you would provide some point of reference or a copy of the document that contains the abbreviation.

Failing that, you could use GENUKI's Gazetteer at http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/gaz

In the first field, Place name, enter an "L" and change Search type to "Word beginning" and then be prepared to wait a minute or two. You'll be presented with a list of just about every location in the UK beginning with an L and you can then search the list for a location that may have been abbreviated as LB.

Could it be Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

or if a country - LB is the abbreviation for Lebanon

Good luck.

There are a few places abbreviated to L B on various censuses:

L B Hackney (London / Middlesex) = Lea Bridge Road, Hackney
L B Deverill (Wiltshire) = Longbridge Deverill
L B Manchester (Lancashire), not figured out what that one means yet
L B Burn (Durham) = Low Beech Burn
L B (Northumberland) = Longbenton
also as has already been mentioned.
L B (Bedfordshire) = Leighton Buzzard

If L B is part of a place, eg L B of Greenwich then it meant London Borough of Greenwich.
