Hi Duncan
I don't have a John Tunnock, my GG-grandmother was Margaret Tinnock who married james Gavin in 1826. Her father was William Tunnock. I suppose there could be a link if your John Tunnock was the son of one of margarets brothers. Do you know John's fathers name?

Janet

Unfortunately I could not open your message - it just sent my computer into a nervous breakdown! Perhaps you can reply here to see if we are researching the same family? My great-grandmother Isabella (twin to Jane) had a younger brother William, born 28 Jun 1866. Joanne

Yes, we are of the same family. William born 28th June 1866 was my grandfather. Your great-grandmother Isabella was his twin sister. It is very pleasing to be able to contact a member from that side of the female line.

Is there anything I can do for you?

Alexander 26 Farm servant, Margaret 25 Dairy maid, they were sponsored by Mr George Rankin. 4th born William married Emily Pluis they had 12 children. The eleventh was Archibald born 1886,
he married Stella Hennessy & had one child Harold George Tinnock (my father-in-law), he married Mary Agnes Shepherd & had one child Michael John Tinnock (my Husband). This is just the one direct line back to Ayrshire. There are a lot of people with lots of information on the lives of all inbetween.

Just thought I would add my information on the Tannocks/Tunnocks. The ones I am interested in were born in Monkton sons of John Tunnock from Kirkoswald and Tarbolton Margaret McKail, Monkton: John b1859 and David b1861.

John seems to have remained with his mother's people whereas David was with his grandparents, (fathers parents) in Tarbolton in 1871.

John Tannock married Mary Dunlop in St Quivox in 1882- they had children:
Marion Dykes b1882
John Brown b1883
Margaret b1888?
David Dunlop b1889
Jane Dykes b1891
Jessie b1895?
Archibald Finlay b1896

They were in Newton in the 1901 Census.

I have two marriage records relating to the same couple, one in which the groom's name was written Tannoch and the other Tonoch, so you might look for that alternate spelling as well. The records are:
23 June 1699 - banns published in Kilmaurs Parish, Ayrshire for James Tannoch and Helen Lin.
3 August 1699 - marriage performed in Kilmarnock Parish, Ayrshire for James Tonoch and Hellen Linn.
I'm researching the Linns and Lynns of Scotland, but I just took a quick look at the Scottish National Archives and Scotland's People and found:
31 Jul 1665 - a testament dative (no will) registered in the Glasgow Commissary Court for William Tannoch in Goldring, parish of Symington [Ayrshire].
24 Apr 1672 - a testament dative registered in the Glasgow Commissary Court for Sibilla Tannoch in Barnweill.
There are also testaments for people named Tannoche, Tannock, Tennock, Tinnock, and Tunnock
1 Dec 1813 - Act approving the composition offered by John Tannoch, shoemanufacturer, Kilmarnock, and agreed to by his creditors, and decreet discharging him of all debts contracted prior to the date of his sequestration, exonering John McCubbin, the trustee of his intromissions [Warrants of Register of Acts and Decreets, 3rd Series, Durie's Office, 2nd Division].
I didn't look for alternate spellings at the National Archives. You can search the Archives for free at:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
Scotland's People, which is a cooperative of the Archives and other agencies, provides some things for free and others for fee, and you have to register first (for free) at:
