I am trying to find any information about Hans Hanson birth: Jan. 1, 1854 Iceland and death: May 31, 1928 in Drayton Harbor South Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington State, United States. He had no legs, lost them in some kind of accident and got around on artificial legs until his death. He emigrated from Iceland to Manitoba Canada and then moved to the Blaine/Bellingham area. His son Bjarni Hanson is my great-grandfather on my father's side.

Well, there is a section about him in the book "Icelanders on the Pacific coast", and the database has a lot of information on his ancestry and current relatives in Iceland.

I don't know what information you are looking for, but to start with, his parents were Hans Wium Jakobsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir, who lived at Gunnlaugsstaðir, Hallormsstaðir-parish at the time of the 1845 census.

You can find the census records online at http://www.manntal.is

The name "Wium" is Danish - Hans' great-great-great-grandfather was Jens Wium, a danish official in Iceland.

Anyhow, finding the information is easy - you just need to be a bit more specific regarding what you are looking for.

I am buying the book "Icelanders of the Pacific Coast" off of Amazon.com and I found the records at www.manntal.is. Thank you for your information.

I am looking for names, birth and death dates, places of birth/lived, everything about Hans Hanson's ancestors (his father and mother, their fathers and mothers, children, etc). I am trying to trace his line back to the 900s. I wanted to see if we are REALLY related to Leif Erickson (Eric the Red) as this is a family story passed down to my father. I wanted to see if we are related to the Vikings.

I found and touched Hans Hanson's grave at Enterprise cemetery in Ferndale, WA. in Nov. 2011 while doing field work at the 7-Eleven in Ferndale, WA. Ferndale is 2 hours north of Bellevue/Redmond, WA where I live and work. I am a geologist and I work at an environmental consulting firm. My client is 7-Eleven, Inc. Retail petroleum work.

I also found the obituary that my other ancestor wrote in the Blaine Journal in 1928 for Hans Hanson and this helped me find his grave at findagrave.org back in Nov. 2010. My other ancester was John Sheets who was the editor of the Blaine Journal and he is buried in the Blaine,WA. cemetery.

The database in question is the 'Islendingabok' database at www.islendingabok.is.

It most of the genealogy information available on Icelanders from the settlement in the 9th century to the present (well, almost to the present - it may be up to a month behind in adding newborns), and some (but limited) information on the descendants of emigrants.

For various reasons (legal and financial) the database is only open to people in Iceland (or specifically, people with an Icelandic ID number), sorry.

Well, regarding Leifur, you are just as related to him as everyone else of Icelandic ancestry. The fact is that for just about every person alive in Iceland prior to 1350 or so, they are either the ancestors of everyone here, or have no known living descendants at all - and Leifur and his father Eiríkur fall into the second category. There are no (reliable) lines that go back to them, so you are not their descendant. You are related to him, of course, but just like everyone else, it is through his mothers side...she (Þjóðhildur) was the daughter of Jörundur Úlfsson, who had a sister, also named Þjóðhildur, who in turn is one of your ancestors.

You do have some interesting ancestors among the vikings of course (but again, exactly the same set of viking ancestors as everyone else in Iceland)

One of your ancestors was the famous poet and homicidal maniac Egill Skallagrímsson, whose story is told in "Egil's saga". He was the father of Þorgerður, mother of Þorbjörg, mother of Ingveldur, mother of Þorgerður, mother of Yngveldur, mother of Snorri, father of Narfi, father of Snorri, father of Narfi, father of Snorri, father of Ormur, fether of Guttormur, father of Loftur, father of Ólöf, mather of Þorleifur, father of Helga, mother of Kristín, mother of Helga, mother of Marín, mother of Guðrún, mother of Guðrún, mother of Gísli, mother of Gísli, father of Halldór, father of Margrét, mother of Guðrún, mother of Hans Wium, father of Hans Hansson.

Another interesting Ancestor is Jón Arason, the last Catholic bishop of Iceland (who was not allowed to marry, of course, but he had 5 or 6 children with his mistress). One of them was Sigurður, father of Þuríður, mother of Árni, father of Sesselja, mother of Hallgrímur, father of Guðrún, mother of Sigfús, father of Jakob, father of Hans Wium, father of Hans Hansson.

As a side note, here is a chart showing the first few generations of Hans' ancestors, just so that you can see which branches end early: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7007/6830254225_fa9cc033be_b.j...

This is what I figured. You have access to the islendingbok and we Americans can't access it for understandable reasons.

Regarding the family tree - the number of known different ancestors for Hans, going back for 30 generations is somewhere around 4000 - the family tree is much, much larger, of course, but when you go far back, the same individuals will appear in multiple places.
