Gertrude Walker--burried Means Cemetery--1937

Surnames: Walker, Bandy, East, ETC.
I have a James W. Walker on the 1930 Bexas Co. Census --Age 24, Carrie M. Walker--age 22, Gertrude Walker--age about 2 1/2 and his Mother in Law, R---A. Howell--age 50 and Widdowed. Hard to read parts of it. In the 1937 Bandera New Era paper, it states that Gertrude-age 10, died in Austin and was burried in the Means Cemetery in Medina, Bandera Co. Tx., the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jas Walker.
Does anyone know this familyand who they belong to?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks, Charlsie

The mother in law's name is Roxie A Howell. There were no Howell's in 1920 Bandera census. Several in Bexar county.

There were several other male Walker's in Pct 3, Bandera county in 1900. Here they are with appx birth yr. I have a feeling that James W who married Carrie was a grandson of James W and Melvina Walker.

Hi Paula, thank you for your reply and info. I don't know anything about the Hills ,Jorden,Jordan or maybe Gorden families. This James W. Walker that married Carrie is some kin to me I am sure but I don.t know how.
The James Washington Walker that married Melvina Elizabeth Bandy and had 13 children, all raised in Medina, Tx.---is my Grand Parents. Their youngest child is Charles Daniel Walker, my father.John West Walker that married Samantha Isabell Moore and had children Tina, Argis, Ada ,Charles and etc. is a brother to James Washington Walker. Are you related to any of these people? Where did you come across Delbert Walker being a brother to James W. Walker? Hope you don't mind the questions!! I would like to find out the connection.
Thanks, Charlsie

Charlsie,

I am not related...just reply to queries. I am assuming that James W Walker and Delbert are brothers as Delbert was listed as nephew in the Hill household and James as grandson in the Amanda Jordon/Gordon household in 1920.

The Hill was Amanda's son from a marriage before the Jordon/Gordon marriage.

I would think that the Walker boys mother was probably one of the Hill daughters as there were 2 and only the one Hill son.

There were so many Walker's in Bandera county that I just could not figure out who the father possibly was.

Good Luck! Paula

Barbara,

Bandera Co Marriage
Gordon, R. L. - Hill, Amada J.
J.Powell- J. P.
July 30, 1891

No other Gordon marriages in Bandera county listed on the Bandera website of Rootsweb.

Richard is not listed in the Means cemetery data where Amanda is buried. Photo of her headstone on the Bandera Rootsweb website.

Now we have a middle initial to go with the Richard, died before 1900 or abandoned family ? No other Gordon's in the 1900 Bandera census beside Amanda and children. Richard Gordon born 1845 -1870 ? Most of the 1890 census burned in 1921.

One Richard Gordon found in the 1880 record in TX, born appx 1846 in LA, single, residing in Live Oak Co, TX....only one listed in Texas census in 1880.

No Richard Gordon's in 1870 census born in Texas. I realize the census records are not an "end all" in finding people but only place I know to start. Texas did not begin to record deaths until 1903.

One Amanda Hough was in Bastrop county in 1880 record residing with sister and brother in law.

John Catchings or Cutchings, brn appx 1849 in TN
Willie, wife, brn appx 1857 in LA, father LA, mother TN
Amanda, dtr, 1872
Milly or Nelly, dtr, 1874
Laura, dtr, 1875
John, son, 1879
Amanda Hough, age 14, TX

Willie Ann Catchings and family went to Brown county by 1900; makes one wonder how Amanda got to Bandera county or did the Catchings go and left ?
The 1900 record indicates that Willie and John Catchings had been married 30 yrs...I did not find them in the 1870 record nor Amanda.

"William"/Willie Hough married 1869, 15 Sept to John "Kitchens"/Catchings in Bastrop county but not accounted for in the 1870 record.

Between June of 1880 and Jan of 1882 Amanda wound up in Bandera county.

James P Hill

Means Cemetery, Bandera county

Photo of his stone next to Laura Gertrude Walker 17 Jan 1885 - 5 Feb 1911.

James P Hill not in the 1880 record in Bandera county...several listed born appx 1860 throughout Texas none showin middle initial of "P".

I am sorry that I can not help you.

Thank you for your information. I'm beginning to piece together the family back then. Susie Gordon was Amanda daughter by Richard and Susie was my grandmother. Allie Gordon was her son, he never married and is the same one from the 1930 Census. He is buried at Oak Rest in Medina as in my grandmother, and her son Lonnie Delbert Slaughter. Thanks again...Barb

Paula,

Gertrude Walker is the daughter of James Watt Walker and Carrie Mae Howell Walker (my grandparents). James Watt is the son of Chambliss Walker and Laura Gertrude Hill(Walker).

Chambliss is the son of James Walker, Sr. and Ella Marsha Bunton. Delbert Walker is the brother of James Watt.

If you have any additional info on Roxie Ann Howell, I would greatly appreciate it. I have a copy of her death cert, but it is incomplete as to the names of her parents.
