I am looking for any information that is available concerning the relationship between the 2 listed above. I am descended from George Washington Bevins a son that came from this union.

Angela,

I am a descendant of Geo Wash Bevins also, thru James Harmon Bevins. I haven't been able to find sources for Mary Polly's marriage to Abraham Compton, nor which Compton family he belongs to. And did he make a decent woman (or not) out of Mary Polly? :)

Have an Abraham (1772) in Va Census lists, but he always seems to be linked to another woman, Nancy Cox, etc. Guess he kept Mary Polly hidden in a closet away from the church folks. If you've solved this mystery by now, could you share it? Virginia

I have not unraveled the mystery. I do know that later she married 1. Walter Stallard and 2. Daniel Ramey ( can't remember the order right now. my email is posted above, I would love to communicate with other "Bevins" descendents - if that's what we are LOL

Angela, I am also a decendent of George through his son, Charles. I was told years ago by a Bevins cousin that Abraham and Mary had a common law marriage. Her family would not discuss this branch much as they considered the children illigitimate. She had no idea why they didn't marry or why they broke up. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Deborah, That is good information. Coming from family, it makes the common law theory all the more credible. I’ve long thought they weren’t married based on the birth records alone.

If I have my dates correct:
First wife Lucy Berry & A. C.’s youngest child, Malinda, was b. in 1818, and Lucy died in 1823. Mary Polly & A. C.’s youngest, Geo W. Bevins (my 3GGF), was b. in 1825.

Abraham could not m. Mary Polly when Malinda was born or he’d have been charged with bigamy. Two years after Lucy died, Mary Polly bore Geo W. Bevins (my 3GGF) and thank God she/they did or I wouldn’t be here. Now, why didn’t they marry after Lucy died? Aren’t the Census records missing for those years?

Mary m. Walter Stallard Dec 1826 and Abraham m. Nancy Cox 1825/26. Talk about rebound. Where am I going wrong here?

According to what Julie told me, and she didn't have much, she thought they had a common law marriage as there wasn't a lot of ministers that came around. It was quite common back then but why they broke up, I have no idea. I know Mary wasn't a woman with a bad reputation or she wouldn't have married two very respected men in the country- Walter Stallard and Daniel Ramey.
Could Mary have come to take care of Lucy's child? Could there have been conflicts in the family that caused their breakup before marriage? I'm not sure we are ever going to find out for sure.
I haven't heard from Julie for years as she was getting a divorce so I don't know if she ever got to talk more to her great aunts or not.

I see this message was posted 4 years ago, and wonder if anyone has new info? George Washington Bevins, born in the 1820's in Virginia, who served during the Civil War in E company of the 64th Mounted Infantry, according to my info, married Elizabeth Hutchinson, had several children, among them Charles Bevins, who himself married Mary Louisa Stallard in 1871 and had several children, among them Samuel Bevins, who is the father of my wifes grandma, who lives in Oroville, California but is in very grave health. Is this the same George Washington Bevins? I found one in Kentucky also, but his birthdate is wrong, and I don't think they are the same man. I am trying to trace my daughters family tree. Grandma Piercy (Christine Piercy, born Christine Bevins), knew her grandpa was named Charles, but knew no further back on that side....I found the George Washington Bevins connection. Has anyone found out for sure his background? Thanks.

I don't have a lot of information beyond this. I've been told that Abraham and Polly had a common law marriage. They had three children, George, Lucinda and Melinda Bevins. Polly later married Walter Stallard.
Charles Wesley Bevins married Mary Louisa Stallard. He was also called Dick. Their daughter Ida Bell who married Henry Hobart Powers is my great grandmother.
I have more on the Stallard side than I do on the Bevins

I've never found an reference to a marriage to Abraham but I do know that her two husbands were well respected in the community. I was told that it was common to have a couple live together because the ministers didn't get around all that often and that when they did come then the couple would marry or not.

My Samuel Walker Bevins, son of Charles Wesley "Dick" Bevins, married Julia B. Bise in Wise Co, Va. I have 8 children for them. If this Samuel is the one for whom you are looking, I have a little info on him I can give you.
