Przemysl is also a town with a train station. We took the train from Krakow toward Przeworsk (?my spelling) and got off at Przemsyl. They must have a church there, but I do not know the name. Woj. Podkarpackie means underneath the Carpathians. Hope this helps a bit.

Hello,

I don't know if this is the place or not, but I am having a very hard time tracing back my family. I am from America, and paid for ancestry.com for several months, with no success. I know my great grandfather's name was Jan Podkolicki, and was changed to John Politsky when he came here to America in the early 1900's. I saw his immigration papers, and they said he came from Sulina, Poland. Solina is the closest city name, and the province of Podkarpackie sounds similar to Podkolicki. If you could provide me with any help, or information I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hi: In the meantime found that woj Podkarpackie means
underneath the Carpathian Mountains. It is an area -
and I put it in the category of a county but don't know if that
is what it actually is. It is near the Ukraine, and one city
in that area is Sieniawa. We were there 2 times since we
wrote the message. The San or Sen river runs along one
edge. Thanks for your reply Catherine O'Neill

Thomas,

Sorry your having so much trouble with your subscription to Ancestry. Unfortunatley as you are no doubt becoming aware, geneaolgy is not an exact science. In fact you have to be something of a detective.

For example, searching on "Sulina" I find it is a city in Romania as well as a proper first name for some people. You are probably on the right track though of varying the spelling since transcription during preparation of immigration papers was rarely accurate.

Good luck with your continuing search.

Larry

I thank you for trying to help me solve this puzzle... I am sure that I am not Romanian. I found a copy of my great grandfather's declaration of intention to America, and here is what it says:

Name: Jan Podkolicki
Race : Polish Nationality: Polish
Born in: Sulina, Poland on February 17, 1885

Wife: Julia Klym
Born: Baklouci, Poland

I may have found a possible solution to this problem. I found information from the census of 1920 here in America, and it states:

Birthplace: Galicia/ Galizien
Halychyna, Poland

I found that this territory is now in the Ukraine, so this may help... If you have any other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Thomas,

Sorry I didn't think of looking further afield. Now that you have reviewed the additional census info you can see how it feeds back to the earlier info.

One thing you may want to continue to check is the relevant PolandGenWeb and EastEuropeGenWeb sections since many of us actually try and put some historical context (old province maps, etc.)

Good luck,
Larry

Hi Stan,
Thanks for the info, spent the day at the Family History Center looking for a 1910 census, no luck. When searching for census information I was told that if you were a boarder you would not be listed, and that you have to read each page in the area as only the Head is noted in the Ancestry files. Do you know if this is true. I did find my grandparents (married) in 1920 and 1930 and he was listed as head.
With the information you have posted, I think I will research Catholic churches in that area and just go another direction. I found a web site that has letters translated from English to Polish asking for marriage or birth records. Someone told me to make a donation and to also purchase a pre paid postage form to send along with the letter. Have you had any experience with searching this way?
I am desperately seeking information on my grandaprents marriage location so I can get information about their parents in Polalnd. They died in the early 30's leaving six children and no information.
Sorry for such a lengthly message, I feel very frustrated today.
Barbara

Thank you Stan. Unfortunately I do not know Polish. I did notice the names Toczek, Starzak and Baran on one of the lists with e-mail addresses, however, I don't know what the information was associated with their names. I will have to get that information translated. Thank you for your help.

My great grandfather, Jan Luc (John Lutz) was from the village of Solina and came here in 1909. I visited Solina in 1993, the original village is under water because a dam was built. The area is beautiful and a popular destination for tourists.

The Podkalicki name comes up in my family often, and many still live in the Solina. Many also immigrated to the Houtzdale, PA area where some of my relatives still live. The name was changed for the most part to Patkalitsky, etc.

You will have luck if you contact the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Przemysl, their records for Solina (in the Parish of Wolkowyja) start in 1822. Email me personally at brennanbo@hotmail.com if you have any questions on how to do this. I was able to trace direct ancestors back to the 1700s using this resource.

wies/village SOLINA > today in Podkarpackie Region, SE Poland

As per Ellis Island Records there are quite a few same surname (Podkalicki) immigrants coming from Solina.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Solina was
known to be predominantly a Lemko/Ruthenian village w/a small Polish population. Lisko was the powiat (adm district) and Ustrzyki Dolne was the gmina (judicial-tax
district). The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Wolkowyja (look for Baligrod for geographical orientation)
and the filial Greek Catholic Church was in Polanczyk.

The Roman Catholics from this immediate area belonged to the Pzremysl Diocese.
