It isn't unusual for this to happen. Most early Cape verdeans were from Portugal and immigrated, either voluntarilly or by force to Cape Verde. Sao Vicente is an island that has mostly English and Italian European heritage. There was a large port there that many whaling ships docked looking for workers. It is possible to get more info by directly contacting the Archives in Praia Cape Verde or even the Registro Civil in Sao Vicente itself. If you have her parents names, try looking at the actual ship records of when they came. It should list the place of origin. Before 1975, it really wasn't popular for Cape Verdeans to say they were anything else but Portuguese. Hope this helps. - Anna Lima Delgado

Hi, I also have an early CVI resident having arrived from Portugal, maybe by force and would like suggestions as to where to start searching his origins. I have that he was a widower late of Lisbon. Can you suggest a shipping website from Portugal to CVI pre-1860? Long shot but I have to ask!
Thanks

Remember, too, Cape Verde *was* a part of Portugal at that time. It didn't gain its independence from Portugal until 1975 when it became the Republic of Cape Verde. So naturally many of the people who lived in or came from CVI would identify as Portuguese and not necessarily Cape Verdean (although some seemed to .. maybe those with fewer ties to the continent?). Their passports would identify them as Portuguese citizens, just as someone from the Azores would. Same as someone born & raised in Hawaii would have a US passport and not a separate Hawaiian passport, or someone born & raised in Alaska has a US passport and not a Canadian passport. You get the idea. ;) Prior to 1975 someone from CVI's nationality was Portuguese regardless of the person's ancestry (Portuguese, British, Italian, African, etc.). So it's not really that it wasn't "acceptable" to say you were Cape Verdean prior to 1975, it was that Cape Verde was not an independent nation prior to that time. It's pretty cool, but it can also be very complicated when researching.
