My most distant ancestor is James Main who married Mary Mitchell; he was a farmer at Balmitchell, a few miles east of Slamannan. His son James also farmed at Balmitchell. His grandson John, married Helen Mitchell. I have not been able to find James' parents and am hoping that there may be someone with information about either 'Main' or 'Mitchell' who might be able to provide me with more information about either line. unfortunately I do not have any info on the specific people you are asking about here. However I do have quite a number of Main's in the surrounding area where your Main's are. My Main's seem to have a farming background they have farms in Glentore, Cumbernauld, Haggs. I have one family in Slammanan,the Father is Robert Main, he appears to be the Parish schoolmaster in Slamannan and lived in the schoolhouse about 1841 - 1851. he has eight daughters all born in Slamannan between 1831 - 1845.
This whole area is packed with Main's, who are mostly farmers.I have a small network of them but Iam guessing that they are probably all connected in some way.I have even come across Main's from one family marrying other Main's. I would be interested in what Main's you are researching, even if there is no direct connection at the moment,It would be good to know , just in case down the line somewhere they connect to the ones I have

do you happen to know if lily main had any middle name or do you know her parents names ( particularly her mother maiden name.)The robert main schoolmaster of slammanan that i have in my tree seems to be married to Christian taylor, but this does not seem to tie up with the grave stones which have been posted in the replies.
