I am looking for my Vetengle family. My reltive Matej Vetengle was born on May 4th 1862 in Bela Nad Radbuzou Bohemia and immigrated to the USA in 1882. I believe they may have changed the spelling of there last name when arriving in America. I have seen the name spelled Wettengle, Wettengl, Vettengl, and Vettengel. I have a picture of Matej's father but no name. Matej also had three brothers, Joseph, James, John, and a sister Anna all born in Bohemia. If anyone can help me please contact me thanks Matt

Hi Matt.
You cannot find the family Wettengl in the phone book of Czech republic there because all of origin inhabitants from Bela were as German people displaced to Germany after WW2 between 1945-1950.
Parish registers of Weissensulz-Bela nad Radbuzou are in archive in Plzen or in "Matrical Office" in Bela. It is nothing in the parish office.
I can look if your Wettengls are really recorded in the index of parish records on next Wednesday.

All the best. Tony.

Dear Tony thank you for the reply. I would love it if you could look for me. I have come to understand that my relatives were German-Bohemian or border people. My Gr Gr. Grandfather Matej from family lore always claimed to be Bohemian not Czech but was a member of the Czech Sociey of Saginaw, Michigan also on some of the census stuff it says Matej was Austria-Bohemian and Czech. Matejs wife Catherine Crkovka was from Tabor so they must of shared some of the same values and traditions. Matej and Catherina were married in Saginaw Michigan not overseas. Tony thanks again for your help. Please feel free to e-mail me at Mattnbarbie4240@aol.com if you find anything or need more info thanks again Matt

Thanks again for your help. My Great Great Grandmother Mary Katherine Crkovsky or Crkovska was born the 28th of January 1868 in Tabor, Bohemia. She was the daughter of Jan and Katerina(Holanova)Crkovsky. Jan and Katerina also had two sons Joa and John Crkovsky. Marys brother Joa lived in Troppa, Bohemia and other brother John lived somewhere near Prague. Mary and parents came to Saginaw Michigan in 1886. She married Matej Vetengle in 1889 in Saginaw Michigan. So I am pretty sure her family is Czech what do you think? Thanks again for your help Matt

Matt

SKA and OVA are a Czech female ending. The term / word Czech is fairly new and before that Bohemian and Moravian was used.
Troppau is Opava. www.ihff.at Surname HOLAN^/ HOLAN^OVA list in Opava's phone book.
VETENGLE does seem foreign, not Slavic.
