Ellen Polson (or Palson in the 1901 & 1911 Census) and Helen Robicheau are one and the the same person... my maternal ggrandmother. Her father William Broughton placed her with the Robicheau's at birth when her Algonquin mother died.

I'm trying to find records of her birth (1863 or 1870 depending which Census records are consulted), she was probably born in North Temiskaming or possibly in Moose Factory up north, where her father worked for the Hudson Bay Company.

She married John Polson around 1888 and died around 1956.

Hello Richard Kelk Broughton,

Thank you for posting your message regarding your ancestor William Kelk Broughton. I'm still researching with the Hudson Bay Company Archives to find out if there is a link or not between WKBroughton and my great grandmother Ellen Broughton. Do you have anything in your family history regarding a daughter born around 1870 either at Moose Factory or in the Temiskaming area? Her mother died when she was born and her father (William Broughton) placed her with a French Canadian family, the Robicheau or Aubichon... still searching the Archives.

Any information regarding a first mariage or relationship with an Algonquin woman would be helpful.

Thank you.

My father was quite into genealogy -- seventy years ago.

His notebook says:
Thomas Kelk Broughton 'Common Brewer' born 18/07/1816 died 21/05/1848. Married 16/11/1841 to Eliza Deborah Hardwicke. Their children were Sophia Mary Broughton born 02/09/1842 and William Kelk Broughton born 08/10/1844.

Eliza married David Durham Wishart on 21/02/1849. It's thought that the money left for William's education was spent by his stepfather and William was shipped off to the Hudson Bay aged 16.

The records in the church at Moose give the date of marriage for William Kelk Broughton to Christine S Horden as 14/09/1876. Christine Horden was the daughter of Bishop Horden of Moose.

William Kelk Broughton (junior) was born 05/09/1877.

Thank you for the information.

Nothing in there about a relationship with a "native woman" 1865-1870?

No, sorry.

I've seen the parish record at Moose and there's no mention.

I've also seen the parish records at Moose Factory. Thank you just the same. I will keep looking.

The family story here is that when the Wm Broughton I'm trying to locate was preparing to return to England he tried to find Ellen to bring her back with him (she had been placed at birth with a family that cared for her).

Then later, Ellen was apparently mentioned in his will on the condition that she came to England to claim her inheritance. She declined. So, if you ever come across something about a daughter by the name of Ellen please let me know. That her father still remembered her back in England in the '20s makes me believe that he cared.

Forgot to mention that the 1901 Census of Canada (Moose Factory) shows a daughter by the name of Mable Broughton (father: William; mother: Christiana); D.O.B. abt 1893, birthplace Moose Factory.
Also, there is a Henry Seaward Broughton buried at the Moose Factory cemetery. Born July 4th, 1883; deceased September 21 1883.
