I’m related to JAMES PEARCE son of SAMUEL PEARCE and BETTY SIMMONS. He was born in Little Compton or Warren, Rhode Island in 1765. James’ siblings were Phepe, Priscilla, Jeremiah, Joseph, Samuel, Mary, Abigail, and John. This lineage was in R.I. in the early 1600.

James PEARCE moved to South Mills, Camden County, N.C. in the early 1790s and married SARAH McBRIDE. I think they had at least these children: Poly b 1796, John b. 1800 - d. 1875, Ira b 1805 - d 1876, Samuel b. 1812 - d 1876, Jeremiah SIMMONS b. 1817 - d. 1869, and Elisha.

Some of the R.I. sources indicate that James’ brother John lived with him in N.C. for 2 years A John PEARCE married POLLY McBRIDE in N.C. He apparently moved back to Warren R.I. around 1794 when she died.

John, Samuel, Jeremiah and Poly moved from South Mills to Tennessee and Mississippi around 1830. Samuel, my GGGrand father, stayed in Mifflin, Henderson county. John lived in northern Mississippi for several years then moved to Arkansas. Jeremiah lived in Dyre county, Tennessee for several years. John and Jeremiah were in Independence county Arkansas around 1850.

One of Samuel’s sons (Jeremiah Dillon PEARCE - my G-Grand Father) moved to Lonoke, Arkansas around 1868 where my Grand Father, Hubert Edward PEARCE was born.

I have extensive data on the R.I. Pearce family as well as John, Samuel and Jeremiah in a Family Tree Maker file that I can share.

My problem is that I don’t have any documentation relating any of James’ death date or burial location. Does anyone have any data on, his or Sally’s death date or any data on the Poly or Sarah McBRIDE?

There was still a Pearce family in South Mills, Camden Co., NC in early 1900's. I don't have any dates on them but John Pearce married Mary Hughes and they had four children. One of their daughters married into the Sawyer family of Currituck Co.

John and Mary were probably born in the early 1880's.

Hi Jean

Thanks for your note. Would you believe - there are still a Pearce folk in Camden County right now and I have had lots of interaction with Martha.

As I commented, 4 of Jame's children moved to Tennessee and Arkansas some time in the early 1830s. I don't know exactly when.

Some of their other children stayed there and their decendents relate to Martha.

We haven't been able to get a death date on James, but I do have a copy of the distribution of the estate of his wife in early 1836.

Do you have any data on them prior to 1830??

No, I don't have anything on the earlier generations. This is a collateral line. I have very little on this spelling but a bit more on the Pierce spelling again these are collateral lines.

The earliest Pierce I have is John b. 1617 in England and d. aft 1669, married Mary Scott. John arrived in this country (New England) on the Hopewell. John and Mary's children were Thomas b. 8 Jul 1669; Rebeckah; and Sarah. I don't know where Thomas was born but he died in Perquimans Co.

I imagine the Pierce and Pearce spellings were both used by these families.

John Pearce who married Mary Hughes was a brother of my grandfather. They had 6 children. Henry, Mattie, James, Ada, Annie, and Samuel Wesley. Ada is the only one still living and she is 97 or 98. Ada and Annie both married Sawyers. Their husbands were brothers from Currituck Co. Ada was married to Orion (called Jack) and Annie was married to Earl.
Our family has almost always spelled our name Pearce. There were several Pearce/Pierce families that apperently were not relaited in New England in the early 1600s

Martha Ann,

Thanks for your info. Who was your grandfather and who were John Perace's parents?

Ada and Jack Sawyer were very close friends of my parents. Jack's name was Rutherford Oran "Jack" Sawyer. He and my mother were second cousins.

I called Ada about three years ago and we talked for about an hour and a half. She had just had her 95 birthday. She is the one who gave me the names and dates of her siblings and there were only four children, including herself. She did not mention a Henry or James . . . where did you get those names. At the time I talked to her, I believe only Wesley "Pete" was dead. I am sorry to hear that her two sisters have passed away.

As I said in my original posting, this Pearce line is just a collateral line, so anything you can provide would be appreciated. The Sawyer's are a direct line. Jack's grandmother and my mother's grandmother were twins.

Warren,
My great grandmother, Millicent F. White, married John Pierce/Pearce of Camden in 1856. They had one son Charles Willis Pierce. John must have died by 1860 as Millicent is back with her parents and remarried William Gaston Perry in 1866. Millicent is buried in the Pierce family cemetery in South Mills.
Is this your family and if so do you have any more info on Millicent?
Thank you,
Frances
