Waterford Bretts

Surnames: Brett, White
I am looking for information on my Grandfather John Joseph Brett who was born in 1903 at the Union Workhouse in Waterford, he has an older sister named Kathie/Kattie Brett from some research it appears her name was Kathleen A. Brett and she married a Fred/Frederick Thompson c1922. My great grandmothers name on John's birth certificate is Anastatia Brett. We are not sure if she was unmarried and this is her maiden name, however some of the aunts in the family believe that her Maiden name was White. There was an Anastatia Brett listed on the 1911 census at the workhouse age 41 however it doesn't mention anything about parents or kids. it is thought that John was raised in mullinavat. I am just looking for any and all info that i can find.

thanks for any help that can be provided.

I have a CD of Civil births 1864-1875. You give an Anastatia Brett an age of 41 in 1911.

Anastatia White #978 Waterford born 9 June 1868
parents Patrick White and Ellen Hayes FHL#101168

Anastatia White Waterford born 25 Nov 1875
parents Patrick White and Bridget Gibbs #255942

There were no Anastatia Brett's between those dates.

Mullinavat Waterford and Mullinavat, Kilkenny see
www.from-ireland.net

In the Slater's Directory dated 1894 were a a couple of Brett's but a bank manager wouldn't be in the workhouse.

Edmond Brett farmer, Curraghuamaddree, Colligan Town

as well as Waterford Union Workhouse, John's Hill
Protestant Orphan Institute
St. Martin Orphanage and Industrial Training-girls-Sisters of Charity
St. Patrick's Orphanage etc. Bros. of Charity - brother of Charity
I could find no records for these

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland-Waterford
www.igp-web.com + Waterford are both good resources see links to Waterford Library.

www.familysearch.org and PILOT (under search records)

5 Anastatia Brett's
42 Anastatia White's

John Brett born Apr-June 1903 Waterford Registration District, Kilkenny/Waterford Co. FHL#1001069 Vol.4 Pg.634

DO you think that the Anastatia Brett that was in the workhouse in 1911 at age 41 is the same one that gave birth to my grandfather in 1903? if so how can i go about finding if any of those anastatia white's married a Brett?

Thank you very much for all the information you have provided.

I won't be able to tell as you did not have a birthdate for
Anastatia, and although it seems an unusual name there were quite a few of that name for both names. If you know the year you can then look at the PILOT to find someone born around the right time.

There maybe Anastatia's in the PILOT will fit better I'm not sure. It needs a lot of patience to go through them all.
In 1903:
Anastatia born 1868 would of been 35
Anastatia born 1876 would of been 27
Anastatia born 1870 would of been 33 (workhouse)

All well within the possibility of being John Brett's mother. I would either get a certificate for the workhouse Anastatia from www.groireland.ie or all three? Also John Brett's birth certificate should have his mother's correct maiden name. You don't need an exact year, the General Registry office do a search around year of birth.
It is possible she never married. A woman alone trying to raise a child in those times may have ended up in a workhouse as you got fed there although conditions were not good.

If you don't want to purchase the certificates you can go to any Latter Day Saints, Heritage Centers with the microfilm numbers you find in the PILOT and research for your time, best phone first to make sure they have the film on file, as there maybe a charge to bring in a particular film. Locations are on the main page for centers around the world.

I hope that makes sense.

I have his birth certificate and it has Brett on it for the name. I have attached a copy of it. I am waiting for a copy of entry of death for Anatstatia Brett that was a wardmaid at the workhouse who died at age 70. i am hoping that i can match the year of death and her age to the person who was on the census of 1911 showing her as being 41. I am curious as to why grandpa didn't show up on the census in the workhouse in 1911 since he would have been only 8 at the time.

anyway just rambling hoping to give myself some direction.

Have you looked at any history of workhouses and their policies, perhaps children were taken away at a certain age and put in a more child friendly enviroment. I do know there are websites about workhouses. AC

I have finally obtained a copy of the death record for anastatia Brett in 1943 and have attached it to this entry, I am curious as to who the George Brett is that is listed on the certificate and how a person goes about getting information from the wyse institute that is listed on the death record as well. I have also attached a picture of the church he had his first communion at, I am not sure where the church is or the name of the church.

On the certificate George Brett is her nephew. There are several births for George Brett's in Waterford but only 1 old enough to be a identified - I assume you would need to be of age?

George Brett died Waterford July-Sept 1850 born 1899.

George Brett marriage 1925 Jan-March, Waterford

Wyse Institute, just bits and pieces on wiki-pedia and other websites. The Wyse family were very well off owning large amounts of land and buildings including in the town of Waterford. Sounds like they had to sell most of it off.

Originally there was a convent and a school donated by the Wyse family, at one point part of the convent was used by the Poor Law Union. My guess is that either the convent became a catholic hospital in the years of Anastatia's death as many other buildings do. There were also big houses that could easily have been turned into hospitals and named for the Wyse family. Thomas Wyse 1791-1862

www.landedestates.ie has some information about the Wyse

One of the town properties was in the Parish of Trinity Without.

The Waterford Library might be a good resource, look through their records under 'local studies'.

I think I probably wrote about the 1911 Census where Anastatia Brett 41 is listed as an inmate. When I look further they are all women, yes that would be normal at that time in any institution but these women are from all over Ireland not just Waterford. I wonder if it isn't a convent? This house housed many women and all are single and RC but the house was considered a private dwelling in the census and the head of the family is listed as Mary A. Loughlin. I think that would discount a poor house, asylum or similar institution.

Any thoughts?

That seems to make sense, so i guess i should try and follow up on the george brett lead and see where the boys got fostered out to from the residence that anastatia was in. It sounded like Grandpa was raised in mullinavat, I would also like to try and trace that church down to give me a bit of insight on what church he attended..
