Seek info on my grandpa's mother, Anna GOSSY who m. Samuel HERMANN and they lived in (what was THEN), Borostyanko, HUNGARY (c. mid-to-late 1800s) and which is NOW called Bernstein, AUSTRIA (in Burgenland).

They had my (maternal)grandfather---Josef Hermann, b.1888, there. He emi- grated to US (c.1906)--ending-up in Chicago, IL, by way of Hannibal, MO, be- fore IL.

I am trying to FIND the particular GOSSY Family that ANNA Came FROM! Does anyone know a site to research for Census or marriage certificates for that area during that time-frame? (in English, hopefully? HA! -i know it will be in Hungarian or German---but one can HOPE!! smile).

Any help, ideas, hints, appreciated......please contact me at my NEW EMAIL ADDY of....

Dear Mohnbauer: Civil recording in Hungary started on October 1, 1895. When the Burgenland came into existence in 1921, it did not revert back to church recording, but kept civil recording. All other parts of Austria got civil recording only in 1938.

"They had my (maternal)grandfather---Josef Hermann, b.1888, there. He emi- grated to US (c.1906)--ending-up in Chicago, IL, by way of Hannibal, MO, be- fore IL."
as he was born 1888 i gave the link for diocesan-archive and the parish-church to the person, as not to find at civilrecords, which started 1895 in Hungary! for him and specially for his ancestors still to research at diocesan-archive and parishchurch.

more complete info:
Das Burgenland gehörte bis 1921 zu Ungarn, deshalb sind die Matriken oft auch in dieser Sprache verfasst.
the Burgenland belonged to Hungary until 1921, so the register books are often written in that language.

Die standesamtlichen Aufzeichnungen begannen hier schon 1895 und können in den zuständigen Gemeindeämtern eingesehen werden.
the civil records began here in 1895 and can be viewed in the appropriate municipal offices.

the Catholic parish registers are for the most part in the Diocesan Archives in Eisenstadt:
http://www.austria.gv.at/site/3929/default.aspx
partly in the parishes.
since 1826 are also microfilmed register books-duplikates, but they can only be viewed in the Hungarian National Archives in Budapest: http://old.mol.gov.hu/index.php?akt_menu=574&set_lang=46...

Das Burgenland hat auch einen großen Anteil an evangelischen Gemeinden:

there were also several Jewish communities, whose records in the archives of the Jewish Central Province of Burgenland is archived: http://www.burgenland.at/media/file/230_Juedisches_Zentralar...

as a supplement - if the inquiring person needs - here are the site of the community Bernstein with e-mail-adress for civil-records-asking. not sure if is needed as person is looking for ancestors back of his birth in 1888: http://www.bernstein.gv.at/index.php?option=com_content&...

Josef Hermann may have had sisters and brothers born after October 1, 1895. The civil records may have more info on his parents than the church records, such as birth places and dates (at least ages).

Duplicates of the civil records until 1920 were filmed by LDS and can be ordered and viewed at LDS Family History libraries.

In southern Burgenland, the duplicate church matrikels start in 1828. They are also available on microfilm from LDS, not only at the National Archives.

also at church-records the parents are stated.
an e-mail to diocesan-archive in english (austrian learn it at elementar-school) by stating his birth-date is an easy way to get them. ;-)
