Looking for any information regarding my uncle John Chaykowski.
He was born January 7, 1906 in the village of Hleschava, Ukraine. This village is about 10 km east of Trembowla. He immigrated to Dauphin Manitoba, Canada with the Chaykowski Family July, 1911. In about early 1930 he left Dauphin and was never heard from again.
Anyone has any information regarding my uncle please let me know.

Walt

Walt,

could he have come down to the states? Have you looked in the SSDI - http://ssdi.rootsweb.com if he might show up in the Social Security Death Index?

CZAJKOWSKI surnames still in existance in good numbers in Poland.

My great-grandparents, grandfather and his brothers and sisters came from Hleszczawa, Trembowla in 1896 and settled near Dauphin as well. Likewise they left the Dauphin area during the 30's and like many others my great-grandparents and great aunts & uncles moved to Francis, Washington probably to work as hop pickers which was common. My grandfather moved, likewise to find work during hard times to Nelson, B.C. and further to Campbell River, B.C. You should contact Jean Tucker who is the rep for the Manitoba Genealogical Society in the Dauphin area who helped me by sending me in invaluable copies from "Hardships To Happiness: History Flows From Pine River and District" which contained pictures and short biographies of pioneer families including my own. She also sent all obit listings for like names from the area and much more. The fees were mostly for copying and postage and not an issue. On a hunch do a search into Washington State cemeteries which are mostly online. Utilize information from William F Hoffman's Polish Surnames which is extracted in large part on the internet. I have run across your surname in various forms and my own family chose at least four different spellings for their name: Baszczak, Baschak, Boschalk, Bostwick. I am very interested in learning as much as I can about Hleszczawa and would appreciate any info that anyone has on the village. Most important is to access the Ksiegi Metrikalne or Parish Register of Hleszczawa, etc. which is available by ordering the microfiche at your local Latter-Day Saints Family History Centre and arranging a time to scroll through the largely manual and Latin/Polish/German entries (a time of an event would make things easier). I am following the latter advice myself and will do my best to keep an eye out for Chaykowski in Hleszczawa.

Thanks for the info Chris. I will check out your suggestions.
I have gone thru the microfiche of the Hlescava Catholic Church Records and found ancesters dating back to 1837. These record only went to 1866 so I have a contact in
Ukraine who was able to fill in the gap between 1867 to 1940.
Did your family also spell their name as Bosiak? There still are Bosiaks in Dauphin.
I will be going to Ukraine this June/July on a 15 day tour with Scope Tours out of New Jersey. I will do a side trip to the village of Hlescava and plan to take alot of pictures. Both my parents were born there. They often talked about the village.
I just finished going thru the Canadian Archive Ship Passenger Lists for years 1903 thru 1912. Found all my family members who immigrated to Canada listed.
One thing I found interesting about the Church Records is that they were quite thorough which made it easier to trace the ancesters.

You are further along in your research than I thought. Most Baschaks still live around Dauphin and our family in N.A. is nearly completely documented through Passenger lists, archives, census, etc. At present I don't find any relation to Bosiaks. I haven't seen the Parish Register for the Catholic Church in Hlescava and gather from what you say that the records for the town are not as complete as the umbrella title Trembowla states (1784-1944). I'm glad to hear the records contain a lot of information though and look forward to searching them. If you are in a position to copy lists or what-have-you from the town I would generously reimburse you and share that information with my hundreds of Canadian and U.S. cousins. I neglected to mention that some of our family ended up in Wisconsin.

Bartko Halaberda was my grandfather, Nastia Chaykowski(Czajkowski) was my grandmother and Anna Chaylowski was my great grandmother.
The Halaberda and Chaykowski families all came from Hlescava immigating to Canada in 1912 and 1911 respectively. I currently live north of Atlanta GA.
How was your grandparents surname listed in the ship passenger list? This is probably the same as it would appear in the Hlescava Catholic Church Records.

Hi Walter,

The Bosiak's in Dauphin are my family. I'd love to know more about the history. I have up to them coming to Canada, and on which ship. I want to go back further to their roots in Ukraine. I need a translator.
