Surnames: Vukovich, Vusich, Lockovich
I am looking for some information on my grandparents. Emil Vukovich was born, January 12, 1896 in Yugoslovia (Croatian I believe) I am told that he came to the U.S. when he was 16 years old. He changed his name to Vusich. I do not know anything about where he was born and am interested in finding information on him and his family. I believe his brother
Matt had also come to the U.S.

My grandmother's name was Catherine Barbara Lockovich she was born, August 18, 1906, in Yugoslovia (also Croatian I belive). She was 3 years old when she arrived in the U.S. I am also trying to find information on her birth place, parents names, etc. I have not been able to find information on the Lockovich name even here in the U.S. It might be spelled differently. I do know the names of her sisters, there are: Anna Lockovich born, June 24, 1910; Mary Lockovich I do not know her birthdate. I know that Catherine and those three sisters where all born in Yugoslovia and had moved to the U.S. I know that another sister named Rose Lockovich (birthdate unknown) had stayed in Yugoslovia. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Carol,

What was their destination in the US?

Also Yugoslavia did not exist prior to 1929!

LOCKOVICH is not found in Ellis Is records, as you sp this name it would be pronounced lochkoveech. Most Croatian names had H added after entry into US, as C at the end of Croatian surname has / over it giving it CH sound.

Thank you for your response.

I know that Emil Vusich (Vukovich) had worked in the coal mines either in Pennsylvania, Virginia, or West Virginia. He ended up in Detroit, Michigan, and had owned a small grocery store in Redford, Michigan.

I do not know about Catherine Lockovich. I do know that she also had ended up Detroit, Michigan.

Hello Carol,

Who did the sisters come with to the US? You never mention an adult.

Perhaps the name is sp. LACKOVIC, sounds like lochkovich. There is a record of a Kata (Kathy, Katherine) arr w/3 children Oct 3, 1908 aboard SS Pannonia. They show up on the Detained List reason tel. $ (needed to telegraph for money) disposition to husband, Braddock, PA.

You can find them by going to web site

http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/mm.htm

Enter Oct. 2, 1908, frame number 298 then enter. They are line 7.

They can be found on regular ship manifest enter Oct 2, 1908, frame no. 353 line 1,2,3 and 4 children's names Karlo (male), Maria age 4 and Jana age 11 mths.

If you have more info about them it certainly would help

Robert

I assume that my grandmother, Catherine Lockovich (probably not the correct spelling, she had taught herself to read & write), and 2 of her sisters had travelled with their parents. I had gotten very excited when I first saw the Kata Lackovic entry. But we are certain that she did not have any brothers, and we do know her sisters names for certain that being Rose, still in Croatia??, Catherine, Anna, and Mary (who is still living in Michigan). Having only girls, and we are certain that they all married, makes it that much harder to find the correct spelling of Lockovich.

Thanks again. You never know they could be a relative!

Kata Lackovich with the 3 children were headed to Braddock to be with Husband Andreza (Andrew). They were my great grandparents. Their 2 daughters were Anna (b1901) and Mary (b1907), 3 sons, Charles, Michael and Matthew.

I was looking for my relatives on ellisisland.org and my father's grandmother is rosalia (rose) lackovic, i found her there and than i google her and found this topic. I asked my father and he said that she had only sisters and that they stayed in usa. she married in usa for nikola paunovic and after that she came back in croatia. In old bible of her i also found this http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/846/241220114428.jpg/ my dad also said that rose's sisters lived in detroit or somewhere around because they stayed in contact after she traveled back to croatia.

If your father remembers their married names, you might be able to trace them through the census. I have seen Lackovic spelled Lackovich, Lackovitch, Lockavich, in the census, it depends on what the census takers hear.
