Looking for information about the family of Jessee G. JONES and Julia (ADAMS) JONES who appear in 1850 Montgomery Co., AL, census, and in subsequent censuses. According to census, Jessee was 27, Julia was 22, and both were b. NC. The children were Jason, 5, Emily, 3, and Zerry (sic), 1, all born AL. Though "Zerry" is reported as male, I believe that this is my gg-grandmother Zeruiah/Zerah JONES who m. John Caffey SPEAR ca 1870, Montgomery, AL; family lore says that Zerah's mother and father were Julia ADAMS and Jesse JONES. Montgomery Co. records show a Zeruiah JONES of the right age to be Jessee's sister marrying a John B. POWELL, and in 1850, Jessee lived next door to a George POWELL, 58, b. GA. Other family lore says that our JONES family were related to a JONES family in Andalusia, Covington, AL

Thanks so much for your detailed information, so clearly reported, painstakingly researched. I will send off immediately to ADAH/courthouse for the probate documents in question. Here are descendants of our branch of Julia (ADAMS) and Jessee G. JONES--I can email you privately the names of living descendants if you are archiving. I also have my gt-aunt's memoirs, which talk a good deal about Zerah, and I can scan and send images of Aeolian, if you like. Information below comes largely from census and family word-of-mouth.

Best wishes,
Lee Harlan Bahan

Julia ADAMS is listed as a daughter of Bryant ADAMS in his will (abt. 1836) in Montgomery Alabama and in guardian records in the 1840's. Marriage record Jesse G. Jones to Julia ADAMS 5/1/1845 bk. E p. 290 Lewis Jones Jr. JP. She is also listed in the probate records of Ashley G.H. ADAMS 1866 as a sister. The names and residences of brothers and sisters are listed in Ashley ADAMS estate records . My ancestors, Wright H. ADAMS and Anna Jane Jones (daughter of Redick Jones) married in Montgomery Alabama in 1836 and moved to Laf. Co. Mississippi. Redick Jones (b.1790 NC) died in Scott Co. Mo., purchased land in Mont. Co. in 1829, his children are listed in his estate records (a Jesse B. Jones in Tenn., no Jesse G. Jones). Redick Jones is listed next to Bryant ADAMS on page 209 of the 1830 Mont. Co. Ala. census record. Wright H. ADAMS is listed in the estate papers of Bryant ADAMS in a cash receipt dated March 12, 1836 Amos Jones in listed as guardian to Julia ADAMS in 1845. An Amos Jones is listed in the census of Laf.Co. Ms. in 1850 p.247., he is 69 b. in SC.
I don't know if the Amos Jones guardian was still in Mont. Co. Ala. in 1850. A brother of Julia's, (W.G. Adams),listed in the estate papers of Ashley G. H. ADAMS, was in Lafayette Co. Mississippi in 1866. He was listed on page 151 of the 1860 Laf. co. Mississippi census.

Thanks--just in time for my trip to LDS tomorrow. I discovered that I can get estate papers on microfilm from them, which will do until I need certified copies for DAR or something. The information about Louisiana matches my great-aunt Mildred LEE's memoirs about Zeruiah (JONES) SPEAR having relatives there. And there is good old Amos JONES again. No, I haven't heard from Marilyn, but am happy to correspond. Julia (ADAMS) JONES was alive when my great-aunt was a girl (1910), so if we can locate Julia in a census 1880 or later, we can find out where her mother was born. Then if we can find Ann HERRINGTON in the 1850, we can see if the locations match. That's not proof, but might help steer toward proof. If Julia's mother were alive, why did she put her daughter in custody of Amos JONES ca 1845? Good story here.

Bryant ADAMS names wife, "Ann" in his will. I believe that she is named in other documents (administration of Francis Elizabeth ADAMS heir of Bryant ADAMS in Montgomery Co. Ala.) as Ann BRADSHEAR wife of E.H.P.HERRINGTON of Washington parish Louisiana , The wording of this document was difficult to interpret you may want to order it also . Ann ADAMS married Edward H. HERRINGTON 9/26/1839 Bk. E pg. 33, jp Amos JONES. Hope Marilyn contacted you as she is researching W.G.ADAMS, Julia's brother.

Ann ADAMS married Edward H. HERRINGTON in Montgomery Co. Ala. 9/26/1839. They were living in Livingston Parish La. at the time of the 1850 census( p.337). E.H. HERRINGTON age 35 b. S.C. and Ann HERRINGTON age 35 b. N.C.,Francis HERRINGTON 13 Ala, J.A.HERRINGTON 10 Ala., also with them were ?? Steward 45 ? Physician, Unknown bp., Stephen Richardson 21 ,Schoolteacher, La., and ?? Gates 30 ,Merchant, Ms.. The printing of ages was very legible, If Ann's age is right she may have been a second wife, or maybe the age is wrong. Other marriages you may not have from the Montgomery Co. Marriage license index at the archives. I copied the Jones and ADAMS entries when I was there. Emily ADAMS married Hugh McARTHUR 11/25/1847 bk. E. p. 426, P.W. SPEAR , MG.. George W. ADAMS married Frances Ann THOMPSON 12/26/1841 bk. E p. 129 W.M. INGRAM, JP.. Just got back from Ft. Wayne. I found a couple of things that you probably have, but in case ... I found in DAR Index to AL Wills:
ADAMS, Hardy. Montgomery Wills 3 1840-1854, p. 164
HERRINGTON, Sarah. Montgomery Wills 2 1820-45, p. 287.
I looked in Robertson's 1892 volume and there were no ADAMS entries, nor Amos nor Lewis JONES. I did not find Julia JONES in the 1901 microfilmed directory for Montgomery; my hunch is that she had moved to New Orleans with son Charles by that time.
Whoa--back up. I checked my Aunt Bibbie's memoirs and she said that one of Aeolian SPEAR's aunts by marriage, whose name was Annie, came from New Orleans to nurse Aeolian abt 1927. My hunch is that this was the wife of Charles JONES b. after 1860, who went to New Orleans, according to a letter from Aunt Bibbie (Mildred LEE). I didn't have time (only had four hours total) to check 1900 LA soundex, but will when I go to Cincinnati in a couple weeks. Couldn't find Jessee G. JONES and Julia in 1880 AL soundex--finally realized they had no kids under five. Need to check an 1880 Montgomery directory to find out where Julia lived, then proceed to find where she is in 1880 full census (census beat or dist.), thus to find where her mother was born.

As for Annisis is remotely possible that Ann was the eldest daughter or Bryant ADAMS Jr. and was named after her mother? Or was she his sister? That doesn't explain the BRADSHEAR, though. In census info on HERRINGTONs in 1850--Francis was born before Ann m. Edward. Did Edward adopt Frances Elizabeth? That's why I thought the Sarah HERRINGTON will might be enlightening--there aren't that many HERRINGTONs, so there must be a connection.

Also learned that Aeolian's sister Johnnie Mildred SPEAR taught at the Sayre School in 1902, Montgomery. The ADAH might have records from that school (connected with Zelda, wife of FITZGERALD) that would tell us where she went, and so help us find any possible kids she had with Dr. WHITE, thus to descendants who know something. I just feel like the Louisiana descendants are going to have the information we want/need.

Don't know if it's relevant, but in Oakwood Cemetery I found a Sarah Eppes ADAMS b. 1791, d. 1853. Late death means she's peripheral to our specific hunt, but early birth might make her an important inlaw.

I am descended from Wright Adams through his daughter, Susannah who married William Harper. I cannot find out who William's parents were, but found where he married Susannah shortly before the Civil War began. He died within 4 months after he enlisted in the Confederate Army, at the age of 21. He and Susannah had one daugher, Mary Ann (Mollie) Harper, who was my great grandmother.
